Is he? As you said, he got traded for nothing. And the Hawks did it willingly a month before the trade deadline.

Yes he is. People laughed at us when we got BI. I will laugh at the folks thinking this is anything but a home run for the Wizards.

I’ll bet money Trae young doesn’t do Jack al for the wizards

Trae’s value is extremely low and is worth very little. He just simply isn’t a winning player and will command a lot of money.

Even I thought he would go for more than this.

Don't forget a lightly protected 1st in ‘28!

This is just a straight up salary dump for a guy who is 27 and is a 3x all-star. I’m with you, I never thought the price would be this low.

Wow, so Atlanta just wanted out of Trae Young business.

Glad we weren't involved. One down, two more to go.

His preferred destination was Washington. That tells you all that it needs to tell you.

Pretty risky for the Wiz. If I’m them I’m letting Trae sit out the entire season to keep my draft pick.

If the Wiz do that I think they come out of it ok.

Sarr
George
Tre Johnson
‘26 top 5 pick

+ Trae and use some cap space to overpay some vets (is the FVV/Tobias Harris special).

Now, if the Wiz play Trae and end up drafting 8th this year and they exit their tank with Trae as their #1 then that’s a disaster of a tank imo.

Yeah that disagreement ended nice and fast. Well done atlanta, letting them just move on. They were never getting much back here.

He probably looked around and thought “who has cap space and nowhere better to spend it next year?”

That and no team with real contending aspirations would want him.

They also really needed a primary ball handler to soak up usage. He gets to go there and play the game he wants to play. Trae made it clear in ATL that he has no appetite for playing off ball. If he did, he'd have gotten his extension.

They do need a ball handler, but for this year? If they are going to cut their tank short for Trae they are just grossly incompetent. At least give him the Ingram treatment and sit him out this year and try to build your team in the off-season with another high pick and cap space.

I wouldn’t call this a “steal” unless I meant it as though someone stole a turd out of someone else’s toilet. :)
Yes, Trae is the turd. You can’t steal a player who holds as little value to winning as Trae.
You couldn’t have enticed me enough to take him at any cost. Just a highly payed bad player.

CJ was an expiring contract. They needed to use it in the next ~4 weeks. I'm sure they'll sit him a bunch. We parked Ingram for the whole year after the last deadline.

Probably depends on a variety of factors. My guess is they want him to decline his option so they can get him on a cheaper deal next year. To do that they had to make the trade now. It seems quite apparent no one wants to pay Trae anywhere close to $48m next year.

Based on how things were going for him in Atlanta, Trae could probably play his game in Washington, and they’ll still lose. So the Wiz give the fans something to watch, and still accumulate the losses!

For us, no. We don’t have complete flotsam to send out like CJ (terrible contract) or Kispert (bad contract).

I can sort of understand from the Wiz perspective. If they want to be respectable next year Trae is an ok stopgap while the young guys (plus hopefully a top 3 pick) figure it out over the next 1-2 years.

If the Wiz want to take a step next year they probably can’t do any better than Trae. He does have some floor raising ability, especially for a team as inept as WAS is in the playmaking department.

Washington doesn't have any reason to get him on a cheaper deal. The salary floor is 140 and they are only at 67 currently. So they will probably gladly offer to pay him for 2 more years until they have to start extending their prospects.

So if they give Trae 2 years at 50 per.....that brings them up to 117. Then they're adding two more draft picks and sign 2 or 3 veterans to make up the difference.

It's a big mistake to count Trae out. This trade was a business deal. Ppl are misinterpreting what it means regarding perceptions around the league. If he didn't have a player option....his basketball value would've been alot higher.

They have almost no salary on the books for next year; I think their active roster would have been at like $70m-$80m next year if they just let CJ and Middelton walk. The floor will be something like a $150m and you have to hit that before the season starts. It would have been almost impossible for them to spend $70m in the off-season in FA or on the trade market. Cap space has lost a lot of its value with the new rules.

Even if they do a new deal with him, I expect them to front load it as much as they possibly can.
