There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Reporters & media n blogs throw Toronto names around for clicks n engagement. It's a known fact, Toronto has a huge internet presence, check our boards compared to other realgm boards, that carries across the internet too.
At one point we never ever leaked stuff, all of a sudden these last few yrs the media knows everything & exactly what we are trying to do? Yeah right, trading for mid 30s AD made no sense ever

I hear you, but Tim MacMahon isn't going to put out baseless rumors out there and - if I recall correctly - he called RJ a "potential future Mav" very recently.

I mean rumors can start from a 60 second phone call that is, "if you gave us AD for RJ + Jakob, what picks would you give to us to entice us?" and DAL says "we would give none".

Boom. Rumor that TOR is interested.

The sabonis rumors always seemed to be more substantial in nature imo.

Get the feeling Bobby was not a fan of the RJ/ IQ trade and wants to get off those contracts.

I still can't believe they traded Doncic for him.

Because the league and Silver mandated it to happen. Dallas was to get compensated with top pick and owners probably got some financial incentives. Nico was the patsy and sacrificial lamb in this whole process.

Question: Can you trade for AD and extend him to a contract at a lower number?

Or, given that it's in-season, he has to be extended at his current rate?

In the NBA, the short answer is no, a team cannot trade for Anthony Davis and immediately extend him to a contract at a lower salary. Under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), extensions—especially those involving a trade—are strictly regulated to prevent teams from "restructuring" contracts the way they do in the NFL.

Here is the breakdown of why this is the case and how the rules apply to Davis.

1. The "Extend-and-Trade" Limitation

If a team wants to extend a player at the same time they trade for him (an "extend-and-trade"), the rules are very restrictive:

• Salary Floor: The starting salary in the extension cannot be lower than the player’s current salary.

• Raise/Length Limits: The team is limited to a 5% raise and a total of 3 or 4 years (including the year remaining).

• The Result: A team cannot use a trade as an opportunity to "haircut" a player's salary to create cap relief.

2. The 6-Month "Waiting Period"

If a team trades for Davis and wants to sign him to a standard veteran extension (which allows for more years and higher raises), they must wait six months after the trade to do so.

• Even after this waiting period, a veteran extension is designed to provide raises, not pay cuts.

• While the CBA allows for a salary to decrease by up to 8% from the previous year, it is almost unheard of for a star player to agree to an extension that pays him less than his current market value or previous salary.

3. Current Contract Context (2025-2026)

As of right now, Anthony Davis is on a massive veteran extension he signed with the Lakers (and is currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks following a 2024 trade).

• 2025-26 Salary: ~$54.1 million.

• 2026-27 Salary: ~$58.5 million.

• 2027-28 Salary: ~$62.8 million (Player Option).

If a team trades for him today, they inherit these exact numbers. They cannot change his 2025-26 or 2026-27 numbers. The only way Davis could "take less" is if he declined his $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season and signed a new, longer deal starting at a lower annual figure (e.g., 4 years, $160 million)—but he cannot do this until that option year arrives or through a complex "renegotiation and extension" which is only available to teams with significant salary cap space.
