Agree! Bobby should be on Andrew Schultz’s couch with the other jokers because he’s got no business making decisions from a nba club

I’m not sure how accurate this information is.
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/20214/jakob-poeltl
Masai hired Bobby cause he was cap expert.
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/20214/jakob-poeltl
Jakob Poeltl signed a 3 year, $84,084,000 contract with the Toronto Raptors, including $61,784,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $28,028,000.
2029-30: $5,000,000 guaranteed, can (i) increase by $5,000,000 per season for each season player plays at least 1,400 minutes (starting with the 2026-27 Season); and (ii) increase by $2,433,333 per season for each season player plays at least 1,400 minutes and team makes the playoffs (starting with the 2026-27 Season).
Masai hired Bobby cause he was cap expert.
Bobby Webster's job at the NBA head office was as an expert on salary cap, luxury tax, and collective bargaining, serving as Associate Director for Salary Cap Management before joining the Raptors in 2013. He worked at the league office for seven years (2006-2013), advising teams, and helped negotiate the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) before becoming the Toronto Raptors' GM in 2017, where he now leads basketball operations.

Kuminga got stared down and is on a 2 year deal that immediately becomes an asset the next year. The Sixers are taking Grimes to FA. Mathurin is going to FA. Imagine if we had given GTj that rumoured 20 mil, when he was immediately floating around for the minimum after.
In the apron era there is no reason to overpay for role players early. The market for a non-shooting C is quite limited. This of course is very much applicable to RJ next year. Take them to FA and the likelyhood that any team with money above the money wants to spend it there is low.

Boogie! wrote:I thought Masai traded for poeltl and Masai gave him that contract. Now that it’s seen as a bad contract suddenly it’s all Bobby’s fault? Mods, talk some sense into this man, I thought there’s no way we can determine who’s actually making the decisions here.
Masai was fired June 28th....Yak signed an extension July 1st.
Regardless what anyone thinks of either its clear that Bobby made the decision to re-sign Yak given Masai was unemployed by then...lol.
Personally I think Bobby looked at it that we had no C in the system who could replace Yak and re-signing him also came with Yak agreeing to pick up the player option for next year at 19.5. So the deal was more like a 4 year deal @under 26 million and he could live with that given the lack of any replacement. That plus knowing that any trade for a star might have to include him in a 2-1 scenario.
I just hope Yak gets healthy as he can have a big impact on this team especially with his screen setting for IQ, Shead, RJ and of course to help us match up against bigger lineups. It would feel like a deadline acquisition if he can come back healthy.

To be honest when Jak is healthy he is an extremely effective two way C. He is the kind that helps you anchor the middle and gets clutch buckets when needed.
If his healthy improves and he plays like last year again I don’t see any issue paying him 25 million. There aren’t that many two way CS in the league.

Bill SImmons has said that teams get a 10 years grace period from their fans after a championship. Maybe he's right. But this six year streak for the Raptors has been brutal and we are looking at nothing but mediocrity in sight going forward.
We somehow managed to go through this entire decade so far:
- being ass to mediocre depending on the year
- but still never having a top 3 pick
- with money to mediocre players clogging up the cap until 2030
- without the assets to trade or acquire a superstar
- without a top 15 player in the league
I know that Ted Rogers doesn't particularly think about the Raptors that much, which is fine, but someone needs to get into his bubble and let him know that Bobby Webster and the management team has to go or this is going to bleed into the next decade.

We somehow managed? It's crazy, right. Just look at all the other teams with top 3 picks and top 15 players in the league. Spurs GM must be a genius for getting #1 pick and drafting Wemby. We need a GM like that.

This is very pessimistic. I think everyone is overreacting. This is our first year post Siakam trying to win. If not for the injuries we’d be solidified top 4 in the East.
I’ve really enjoyed the season so far. Only 1 team wins each year…
Go raps !

This is pretty fair, but still, what’s the rush? Where’s the upside?
Absolute best case scenario was a fair deal. He wasn’t going to break out and command $40M AAV. I don’t know that he’d even get the contract he got as a FA even if healthy. The market is just so tight for players at his level.
You can’t reasonably blame Bobby for not predicting this lingering injury, but it wasn’t particularly likely to expect the same health and production from age 30-34.

TWO told the board this back in 2022 and we got laughed out the gym lol.
There’s a good chance the city doesn’t get to experience winning a single playoff series in the 2020’s, that’s a real outcome based off the moves we’ve made since Tampa.
It is what it is, we got a fun team when healthy, it could be worse. Scottie is still getting better, CMB seems like a future all defensive first team caliber of player. Shead is a fun watch, we have all of our first round picks .. it’s not as doom and gloom as you’re making it out to be.

Overly pessimistic and dramatic.
They've only had three seasons under .500 this decade. And Tampa shouldn't count

Raps don't play hardball with their signings... so, they generously overpay.... been that way for as long as I remember...

Thia ia a 50 win team if healthy.
However, the playstyle isn't really conducive to having a healthy roster. High energy (transition, deflections, ball pressure).
I think you need a deeper roster to play this way.
Who knows. Maybe they get there.....

The 2021-2022 season was fun at least. The Thad Young trade looks more and more costly by the day.
If not for GTJ contracting the plague, Scottie getting hurt, and FVV being a shell of himself, the Raptors might have beaten the Sixers that year.

Re: Do we really want the guy who gave Poeltl his contract to make future decisions?
I mean yeahhh.....The many many blunders from the front office from both Bobby/Masai have lead to many years of being a crap team, bad product for a while now...
Mostly because we went half assed on everything we been doing and not taking a firm stance, Direction and tripling down on that direction....Going half assed on the compete side with Siakam/FVV/OG trying to add a mid talent like Yak....If you want to try and compete with Siakam back in them days you go make a serious splash and trade maybe even Barnes at that time and draft picks for a legit superstar player....Not giving up draft picks and assets for a non all star C who does not even help you get past the Bulls in the play ins.....Idiotic moves like that set the franchise back years....
And if you were going to go half assed on the compete side of things than at that point you are better off switching directions before you lose guys for nothing or get less than what you could have in trades....And go full young with Barnes and play the draft/accumulating assets route for a few years....Not half assed draft picks either try and get as high picks as you can for the best results possible and move off all vets and players of value for draft picks/young players.
Moral of the story when building an NBA team never half ass a building strat and go either all in on the side you choose because teeter tottering between the two you end up where we have been for 5 years in no mans land...
That being said we have a chance to reedem ourselves....We need to make the right moves and if we are trying to compete lets go for it and go get some talented players on the market that could raise the ceiling of the team...

The city didn’t experience it, that’s why I put it there for a reason lol. Beating the broken Nets in Tampa hardly counts lol.

How so, my thread was a specific discussion on Bobby Websters decision making based on handing out the Poeltl contract.
Do we know when this fluke back injury occurred, if he wasn't dealing with it when he signed the deal this summer?
I mean its not a positive take - if the goals is to hide those from offending eyes that only want happy time, I get it. But its not the same discussion at all, really,
