Drafting's hard when you aren't gifted a top 4 pick over and over.

Spent too much time being a famous NBA player and not enough time on his game.

OMG NO! :banghead:
You think VAndo is a bad shooter? Sochan is actually worse. I think the main reason the Spurs played him for an ave of 26 mins and change was to tank and get the high draft picks.
And the result of him laying bricks? Spurs get Vassell, Wemby and Cassell.
Mission accomplished, thanks Jeremy, now get out!

I wanted them to take Duren. But in the end those two drafts eventually led to Wemby. No muss, no fuss.

He is athletic and a decent defender but is the worst sort of player, anti-basketball in every sense, and his ilk should be avoided at all costs. Please do not talk yourself into him, he’s completely awful and there’s a reason he got cut.

that's crazy..Sochan is still just 22

many teams would take a flyer on him and it's def not a forgone conclusion he won't be able to carve himself an NBA career

It makes me get the feeling this is a lot more than just his play. That his "character" just doesn't fit.

The 76ers already have 2 or 3 guys like him on the roster. Dominick Barlow does everything Sochan does and is a better rebounder. Jabari Walker does the same things, is better rebounder and barely plays. Sochan is just a name, because he was a lottery pick.

Actually if you ask me which Center I want for my perfect championship caliber team, I will chose Asik hands down

Raptors or Warriors should take a flyer. He’s fine as a bench piece playing 18 minutes a game for defensive lineups that run a ball hog guard. The Spurs roster post-Wemby is the worst place for him. But he can stick around the league for a while so long as he plays the Speights role.

This again illustrates how lucky the Spurs have been compared to the rest of the teams.

A team who has smart management and great luck on top of it? Phew.

What if Harrison Barnes and/or Champagnie will be out in the playoffs with an injury?

Will they play him with his lack of shooting as a forward in the playoffs?

I doubt it very much, it's tough being a guy his size and having very little outside shooting ability.

Why not as a PF next to a shooting C like Wemby?

He isn't a shooter but there are more things in basketball and he is pretty good on defense/switching and rebounding.

IMO the Spurs are committing a mistake here.

Because while Victor can shoot, you want other guys creating space for him too so that he can also operate inside and get to the basket. Sochan doesn't have enough offensive value for one to be pushing Victor more to the perimeter to make room for Sochan.

If he was some great slasher who put pressure on the rim and opposing defense, or some great passer who made plays for others, or something so you can justify it. Pulling my star to the perimeter more to create space for a guy like that is bad coaching.

Don't make it sound like it's all been a bed of roses for the Spurs. Prior to the last three drafts, when the Spurs had no-brainer picks at #1 (Wembanyama), #4 (Castle) and #2 (Harper), the Spurs had one of the most effed up runs of draft dumbassedness of any team in the League:

2018 - Spurs took Lonnie Walker at #18 instead of either Kevin Huerter (went #19), Josh Okogie (went #20) or Grayson Allen (went #21)

2019 - Spurs took Luka Šamanić at #19 instead of either Matisse Thybulle (went #20), Brandon Clarke (went #21) or Grant Williams (went #22)

2020 - Spurs took Devin Vassell at #11 instead of Tyrese Haliburton (went #12)

2021 - Spurs took Joshua Primo at #12 instead of either Moses Moody (went #14), Alperen Şengün (went #16) or Trey Murphy III (went #17)

2022 - Spurs took Jeremy Sochan at #9 instead of either Jalen Williams (went #12), Jalen Duren (went #13) or Mark Williams (went #15)

2022 - Spurs took Malaki Branham at #20 instead of either Christian Braun (went #21) or Walker Kessler (went #22)

You have to go back nearly ten years to find some legitimately great picks made by the Spurs - guys like Derrick White (#29 in 2017), Dejounte Murray (#29 in 2016) and Kyle Anderson (#30 in 2014).

He wasn't though

The problem is not only that he can't shoot, it's that he won't shoot too. He literally does not look to score when he is on the court which makes him unplayable with Victor because his man can just leave to double and because SA has guards like Castle/Fox/Harper who are average to poor shooters, he is unplayable in most lineups. On top of all that, he kind of strikes me as a knucklehead. I remember his time here more for his antics than his actual production

Think about it. The Spurs have NO POWER FORWARDS on their roster now and they chose to release the only one they had rather than play him. Should tell you a lot

Harrison Barnes is unquestionably a Power Forward and has been for the past 5 seasons.

Barnes is not a PF by any measure of the imagination. All he does is shoot and sometimes score. He doesn't have the size, the rebounding, and the defending instincts of a PF. Wemby is hiding him

Sochan was released because SA valued shooting more than defense

Agree on 2021 and 2022 but you're really nitpicking on 2018 and 2019 since all those guys are bums or journeymen anyway (except for Allen who is solid). You also didn't give them credit for drafting Keldon Johnson in 2019 at 29

19 or 20 games.

We have pushed other players into lead guard/O initiator, too. That wasn't about making them PGs but about seeing the whole set, having a responsibility of running the O, giving up the ball, learning reads beyond one's role.

We took a faster bigger leap and couldn't wait on Sochan to finally show some handles and court vision and some semblance of passable scoring.

Hope he finds a home he's happy in amd can grow and have a pro career.
