Don't make it sound like it's all been a bed of roses for the Spurs. Prior to the last three drafts, when the Spurs had no-brainer picks at #1 (Wembanyama), #4 (Castle) and #2 (Harper), the Spurs had one of the most effed up runs of draft dumbassedness of any team in the League:

2018 - Spurs took Lonnie Walker at #18 instead of either Kevin Huerter (went #19), Josh Okogie (went #20) or Grayson Allen (went #21)

2019 - Spurs took Luka Šamanić at #19 instead of either Matisse Thybulle (went #20), Brandon Clarke (went #21) or Grant Williams (went #22)

2020 - Spurs took Devin Vassell at #11 instead of Tyrese Haliburton (went #12)

2021 - Spurs took Joshua Primo at #12 instead of either Moses Moody (went #14), Alperen Şengün (went #16) or Trey Murphy III (went #17)

2022 - Spurs took Jeremy Sochan at #9 instead of either Jalen Williams (went #12), Jalen Duren (went #13) or Mark Williams (went #15)

2022 - Spurs took Malaki Branham at #20 instead of either Christian Braun (went #21) or Walker Kessler (went #22)

You have to go back nearly ten years to find some legitimately great picks made by the Spurs - guys like Derrick White (#29 in 2017), Dejounte Murray (#29 in 2016) and Kyle Anderson (#30 in 2014).

Agree on 2021 and 2022 but you're really nitpicking on 2018 and 2019 since all those guys are bums or journeymen anyway (except for Allen who is solid). You also didn't give them credit for drafting Keldon Johnson in 2019 at 29

I also didn't go into the full extent of how totally effed up at least one of these picks was. Joshua Primo (a pick nobody understood at the time) was literally a sexual pervert who exposed himself to the team's sports psychologist on multiple occasions. The point remains the same. The Spurs were headed towards a death spiral of their own making were it not for their good fortune in landing the #1 pick that got them Wemby.

2021 and 2022 were **** drafts, mostly for on court and one glaring off court reason.

If Castle was such a no brainer how come three teams ahead of us passed on him?

2018- Allen is solid. Huerter 10/4 and Okogie 5/3 are journeymen.

2019 - is Thybulle and his 5/1 some sort of gem? Is Clarke and his 4/3 irreplaceable?

2020 - everyone knew Haliburton's agents were telling teams he wanted to be drafted by the Kings. You could make a case for just taking a player regardless but we also already had Murray and White. Dev is a solid two way player.

I also feel a lot of this is hindsight GMing. Like why aren't teams ahead of us criticized for not selecting Hali or Sengun (who I can't stand and am glad we didn't pick) or Trey Murphy III? Moody is a non factor. Who really saw Hali being at the level he's shown?

So while some years it's fair criticism, the comparisons for some alternate options are barely better if at all which doesn't really strengthen the point made while other options is 20/20 arguing which makes every other team who passed on them look bad as well.

We also hit on Tre Jones and Keldon Johnson who got overlooked.

So yeah. Some context matters even if for some years I concede the point.

The Pacers managed to hit well on "second opportunity" guys that we scored for cheap with Nesmith and Toppin... maybe we could do the same with Sochan? Worth a shot, right?

Definitely worth a shot for bottom teams like the Pacers , Nets , he needs playing time and good coaching

Not just her but other women in other states. Like who the **** saw that coming??

Keep in mind we've been scouting Wemby since at least his mid teens. You think we didn't know when to bottom out?

You're also ignoring excellent cap management with refusing to take on longer contracts, ignoring very good trades (not only what we got back but also when we traded them) in DeRozan, Murray, White.

The preparation for the 2023 draft was long in the making. Yes lotto balls bounced our way. Buy we also made sure that if they did, we'd be in an excellent position going forward. Et voila.

Three top 4 picks in a row and climbing 5 spots above to get Harper in the last draft basically negates all the previous ones. I'm not talking about the picks in the middle, every team whiffs on those.

It gets a lot harder to miss when you get three top 4 picks in three consecutive years while never moving down from your lottery position.

Spurs have been insanely lucky in the recent years when it comes to draft positioning, this isn't even a debate.

Explain the Primo pick? Seriously, even at the time, folks were scratching their heads about a pick that came out of left field. And then, the guy is out of the League within 3 years for repeated sexual exposure to female team personnel? Whatever the hell was going on with the Spurs scouting and development for several years there was organizational malpractice - at best.

You're doubling down on a point nobody saw coming. It's not like we found sexual deviance in hos background check and decided to ignore it.

And after a whole year by year countering and showing your alternative options were weak or other teams also passed on players who later emerged, you come back with dysfunction of an entire department - for several years! -over one player.

The prototype of Primo is still one we've continued to pursue - bigger, two way guards. You could aee it in some players who didn't work out (Weatherspoon, Primo, raw but we'll never know what he could have been as a player) and some who are working out (Castle, Harper).

I think you're trying to shoehorn a point with spotty examples. Some most Spurs fans will concede, Sochan included. But there's a lot you've left out that takes away from FO operations doing well, too.

He wasn't though

The problem is not only that he can't shoot, it's that he won't shoot too. He literally does not look to score when he is on the court which makes him unplayable with Victor because his man can just leave to double and because SA has guards like Castle/Fox/Harper who are average to poor shooters, he is unplayable in most lineups. On top of all that, he kind of strikes me as a knucklehead. I remember his time here more for his antics than his actual production

Think about it. The Spurs have NO POWER FORWARDS on their roster now and they chose to release the only one they had rather than play him. Should tell you a lot

This screams Miami Heat and Spo. Watch Spo play Sochan over Ware.

He'd def play over Jovic.....

Barlow is a better rebounder? not even close..rebounding might be Sochan's best attribute, dude is a beast on the board

but yeah, he's the last player the 76ers need

I thought he could be in the mix with Jabari Walker to backup Barlow's starting spot. Barlow had been starting on a two way contract lol

Knowing when to get off a player is just as important to knowing what players to keep and develop. If a player doesn't develop under the Spurs organization it's hard to imagine he is going to be successful elsewhere.

Meh. You can paint it however you want. The whole Spurs organization was going nowhere fast with a series of troubling picks until they lucked into the Wemby pick - which actually gives hope to all the perpetual screw up teams out there that, sometimes, all it takes is one phenomenal pick to wipe the entire slate of sub mediocrity clean.
