Jeremy is not bad....he's young and hasn't developed as rapidly as the team's success has.

Hes just not as polished as the other guys and his skill set for what the Spurs needed was not up to par. He struggled making the correct play offensively and defensively this year.

He needs to have more opportunities to play make mistakes and grow but he has to get better in the off season and add a consistent 3pt shot at least.

At only 22 his upside is still there, he has the chance still to be a very good rotational player one day and possibly an elite defender.

He is career two-way- negative player, 6'8, 53% TS guy, without jump shot from mid range, without reliable 3 point shot and who isn't strong ball handler, passer nor decision maker.

He plays hard on defense and tries. But he is far from positive defender. He is still too slow to defend perimeter on consistent bases, and too small and not skilled enough to defend rim. Nor Spurs, with Victor ,really need another rim protector.

He is type of player that is entertaining train wreck during painful rebuilding years, but simply doesn't contribute much for winning teams.

Players like him simply have low ceiling, and Spurs are very smart to separate muscle from fat.
Spurs are always excellent team because they pick and choose players who are excellent at something. And who know and understand their role.
Sochan, 4 years into nba, still has no role nor purpose on offense, because he simply does not have one.

Entire purpose of his existence on the floor, on offensive end, is to take bad 3s and attack offensive glass.

This isn't really *my opinion*. Spurs probably tried to trade him for just about anything, without taking bad contracts in return, and got nothing. So they just cut him loose.

Guy is 22 but what can he do to help out any nba team, that is trying to win? Answer is very loud and obvious. Nothing.

So he can just join some bad team in tank purposes, for very same reasons guy like Bamba, Bagley , Wiseman & others hang in (and out) NBA.

Okay, thank you. Indeed, it's clearer now, even though I'm not a fan of analytics stats, I understand that he definitely needs to improve.
He is only 22.

Remember when the Spurs were playing this guy at the 1 and Spurs fans on here were trying to earnestly convince us that it wasn’t a complete tanking, game-throwing move.

Hmm.

Sochan is six fouls. That can be a useful thing to have on your bench as long as it doesn't complain about being there.

Its a short road from being the 9th pick to possibly out the league. Happens more often than people think....

Naw he'll stick in the league, he has a skill set which is hustle & defense. That typically sticks

It was 19 or 20 games. Spurs moved on from that much longer ago than the whole thing lasted.

Anyway, as I've said before, we pushed other non PGs into primary ball handling/O initiating duties to good effect for their overall game.

Sochan had a clearly defined role this season, per Mitch. So he either wouldn't or couldn't do it. Both sides move on.

A team who has smart management and great luck on top of it? Phew.

Don't make it sound like it's all been a bed of roses for the Spurs. Prior to the last three drafts, when the Spurs had no-brainer picks at #1 (Wembanyama), #4 (Castle) and #2 (Harper), the Spurs had one of the most effed up runs of draft dumbassedness of any team in the League:

2018 - Spurs took Lonnie Walker at #18 instead of either Kevin Huerter (went #19), Josh Okogie (went #20) or Grayson Allen (went #21)

2019 - Spurs took Luka Šamanić at #19 instead of either Matisse Thybulle (went #20), Brandon Clarke (went #21) or Grant Williams (went #22)

2020 - Spurs took Devin Vassell at #11 instead of Tyrese Haliburton (went #12)

2021 - Spurs took Joshua Primo at #12 instead of either Moses Moody (went #14), Alperen Şengün (went #16) or Trey Murphy III (went #17)

2022 - Spurs took Jeremy Sochan at #9 instead of either Jalen Williams (went #12), Jalen Duren (went #13) or Mark Williams (went #15)

2022 - Spurs took Malaki Branham at #20 instead of either Christian Braun (went #21) or Walker Kessler (went #22)

You have to go back nearly ten years to find some legitimately great picks made by the Spurs - guys like Derrick White (#29 in 2017), Dejounte Murray (#29 in 2016) and Kyle Anderson (#30 in 2014).

Three top 4 picks in a row and climbing 5 spots above to get Harper in the last draft basically negates all the previous ones. I'm not talking about the picks in the middle, every team whiffs on those.

It gets a lot harder to miss when you get three top 4 picks in three consecutive years while never moving down from your lottery position.

Spurs have been insanely lucky in the recent years when it comes to draft positioning, this isn't even a debate.

Yeah when you have had 3 times as many top picks as Sac and they are in much better years you are pretty lucky and at least the same number of picks at 2 and 3.
1’s) Sac Ellison Spurs Wemby, Duncan, Robinson
2’s) Sac Bagley. Spurs Harper
3’s) Sac Owen’s. Spurs Elliott

I like his defensive effort despite what stats say. Hopefully, he can land somewhere with a good shooting coach and be able to work on it for a couple of seasons.

The Spurs are a good organization, they did what is best for him instead of like what the Warriors did with Kuminga. They just let him go to maybe find a situation that better fit his game and or development. I like the Suns kids right now but still think he could continue his development in our system. We thought he was gonna be in the KD deal if the Spurs had actually wanted him. Videos of Jeremy actually showing up in Phoenix to train around the time the rumors of KD to San Antonio were percolating, had us wondering.

Knicks were really going after him at the deadline and need a 3rd big now that Yabusele is gone and Mitchell robinson not playing any back to backs. Having another "tough" guy on the bench after adding alvrado wouldnt hurt either

Andre Roberson, Stanley Johnson, Kent Bazemore, Juan Toscaon-Anderson etc would disagree with you.

Maybe Knicks can resurrect the career ex Lakers' Centers. Take your pick. Alex Len, Damian Jones, Wenyen Gabriel, Harry Giles, Trey Jemison. Tristan Thompson.

Really different roles. Bonga was a skinny perimeter player who teams hoped could turn into a versatile 3&D athlete. Sochan is 40+ pounds bigger, and guards big wings and centers. He's a better playmaker than Bonga too. Sochan was very productive for the Spurs last year, and we never saw Bonga reach that level.

I thought Sochan had some Boris Diaw to him early on, but the passing and interior scoring haven't been special enough to compensate for the weak shot.
