Where does JJ Redick rank among coaches?

He’s done a hell of a job during the last two regular seasons with what I think are flawed rosters. He should at least make the second round if he’s really the goods though (giving him a pass for injuries of course).

So far I’m pretty happy with him, and I’ll tentatively say I think he’s top 10.

I’m not really a fan of the guy because of the plumbers comment, but he seems like a solid coach.

From an outsider perspective he seems good. Don't think I would say top 10. Not sure how Lakers feel about his development side of coaching. Seems like a good coach for good players and veterans, but that is different than developing young players. To me that is what separates a good coach in the NBA from great. When ever I have listened to him on a podcast or tv interview I get the impression the man really knows ball. It's really hard to gauge coaches when they have a talent like LeBron or Luka on your roster. It's a lot less of X & O's by the coach and more move out of the way and let your stars do their thing. Well see if he can make good adjustments in the playoffs. If I remember right most Laker fans were a bit upset with his playoff coaching decisions early on.

He's creative. He's willing and able to adjust based on the roster. How this will work in the playoffs and how all that looks once he has a team that makes sense? I think that'll determine where we rank him. For now I'd say we should cluster him in the 10-20 range with a note that there's good reason to believe there's upside.

He's good. I can definitely say that over the 6 years before JJ in LA, I was constantly dumbfounded by some of the rotation choices and strategy choices by Laker coaches. I don't find myself doing that with JJ which has been nice

Smart guy but still a lot to learn. But he's improving quickly.

Coaching is an art. Redick definitely knows the game but coaching is more than that.

But IMO he's way better than he was last year.

I respect his ball knowledge but it is hard to place him because outside of the top 3 and bottom 3 coaches it is hard to rank 1 coach over anorher.

I think he definitely is improving but ultimately, i will reserve final judgement until i see how The Lakers perform in the playoffs (the ultimate litmus test]

But i like the guy though.

It's a fair question but anyone answering has to keep in mind he's in his second season: coaching the Lakers — of all franchises — and LeBron and Luka.

So perhaps the more stimulating question is how is he improving and what is his potential? Almost like we would analyze a second-year player.

Or better said, answering the OP with that layered on.

My take: I would lump him in with all of the coaches in the average tier, but with the potential that he could be considered above average in the next couple seasons if he's not there already.

I think it's fair to say his timeline aligns with the FO's plans for the roster, and his growing pains are considered worth it.

He's a critical thinker like me that's what I noticed immediately about him last year from the beginning. Even though he went through some failures and growing pains, and continues to do so, he's one who I knew would progress to be great at what he chooses to do.

He got exposed last playoffs. This regular season means nothing. We will see if he improved or not in a few weeks.

Spot on Himbo. Playoff success (or lack thereof) should matter for a coach's legacy as well as a player's.

I can't claim to speak on behalf of Lakers fans as a Celts fan, but i would think winning a playoff series is a non-negotible pass mark for JJ as coach (i don't think any realistic/sane Lakers fan expects a chip this season)
