i dont think lofton is ready to be a bench player .... he was a major contributor for cleveland in the alcs last yr

Only way Pelfrey should be on the opening day roster is if he pitches lights out in Spring training.

I agree. You have to give the 5th spot to Duque, no iffs ands or questions.

but it's unlikely that Duque will pitch a full season, Pelf will likely get called up during the season. Now if Pelf is lights out in pre-sea, maybe we switch Duque to the Pen but that's not how I'd predict the outcome. I think Pelf should be better this year, but I don't forsee him as lights out dominant, where he forces his way into the lineup.

as far as OF, Lofton might come here given that Alou never plays a full season either. I'd be happy if we sign Lofton. I'd give him a 2 year deal.

Bench:

UT - Damien Easley
UT - Marlon Anderson
OF - Endy Chavez
IF - Ruben Gotay
C - Ramon Castro

Starting Rotation:

SP - Johan Santana
SP - Pedro Martinez
SP - Oliver Perez
SP - John Maine
SP - Mike Pelfrey/Orlando Hernandez/Livan Hernandez(rumored)

Bullpen:

CL - Billy Wagner
8th - Aaron Heilman
7th - Duaner Sanchez
RL - Pedro Feliciano
RL - Scott Schoenweiss
RL - Matt Wise
RL - Joe Smith/Jorge Sosa/Steven Register/Orlando Hernandez(if Livan is a Met or if Pelfrey has a good ST)

The 8 player starting lineup is a given.

Omar has said that El Duque is in his starting rotation, so baring injury, the 5 starting pitchers are a given too.

link

RHP Orlando Hernandez is not a prospect to go to the bullpen, GM Omar Minaya said. Hernandez will compete for the fifth spot in the rotation with RHP Mike Pelfrey. "El Duque is part of the rotation," Minaya said.

This means Pelfrey is expected to start the year in AAA.

from the same article:

Projected Bullpen:

LHP Billy Wagner (closer)
RHP Aaron Heilman
LHP Pedro Feliciano
LHP Scott Schoeneweis
RHP Jorge Sosa
RHP Matt Wise

Now, I can't imagine that Sanchez won't make the pen, but can a team carry 7 bullpen guys and 5 bench players? That's going to be an interesting decision.

PROJECTED RESERVES:

C Ramon Castro
INF Marlon Anderson
INF Damion Easley
OF Endy Chavez
OF Angel Pagan

I think Gotay played well enough last year to deserve a spot on the team from day 1, but that begs the question, who do you cut? Do you go with 6 bullpen and 6 reserves, or does Pagan start the year in the minors or is this article right and does Gotay start in the minors?

I think Joe Smith gets half a year to work on his stuff in AAA, that's almost a given.

ugh. i hate those 7th and 8th inning roles in the bullpen. they're counterproductive.

At least our pen looks a bit better than last year.

and Santana should pitch deeper into the games that Tommy "6 innings when I'm on" Glavine.

I think Delgado is gonna have a Shawn Green season and Alou is gonna miss at least 80 games.

Other than that, the team should win 95+ easily.

I think DelGado is the big mystery. Prior to last year he was a consistant power guy, so he could either bounce back or continue his slide. I imagine we make a trade mid season if he really appears to be done (or give Ben Johnson or Gotay or Valentin a look at first, see if they can fill in well enough), but if Gado gets worse, I wouldn't be surprised to see a mid season trade.

And Alou, I hope he stays healthy, but I could see him missing 120 games. Our OF is also a little scary, and we need a solid season from Church.

but I think the team can weather whatever we get from Gado & Alou and still do fine and if those 2 produce - look out. This could be a 100 plus win season. Pedro, Santana, Perez in a contract year. Maine, Duque and Pelfrey waiting in the wings, and good hitting, good bench and a good pen. We might see 101-105 wins for this team.

Just want to give you Props B&O - I think you called it correctly. You can still find articles that say that Pagan will make the roster over Gotay and I guess nothing is set in stone, but I think you got it right. 7 bullpen guys, 5 bench players.

The biggest question for me is Register, and the Rule 5 draft situation.
