For group 1, I think if they were to sign contracts today, Johnson and McDaniel's would be in that 2nd group easily.

Healthy Tyler Herro is probably at least on Brandon's level with less upside, but the rest of group 1 isn't as good as Brandon.

For the 2nd group, I think Brandon is most similar to Porter Jr.

So I'll say a fair contract for Brandon is 5 years, 175. That's about 35m per year, which is a lot for a proven injury prone player, but a healthy Brandon would probably closer to 5/210.

Although with the cap going up, he may be closer to 210 regardless. I think we need to start looking at contracts as %'s of the cap, instead of raw total.

Braggins wrote:Im not good at all at projecting contracts but off the top of my head I would have guessed 25-35 mil per year as his range. Hes been injured a lot and hasn't quite lived up to his talent level yet and hes a bit older than the guys in his draft class. It wouldn't surprise me much if he got more than that though.

The low end of that is definitely not happening. In terms of percentage of the cap, that's the equivalent of what we gave a 30yo Marvin Williams during the 2016 offseason and a fully unproven Terry Rozier in 2019.

If anyone's wondering what Nic Batum's contract would look like on the 2027 cap, that would be $44.2M/year. 5/221M, and that is approaching the rookie max. The equivalent to Hayward's contract would be an even worse 4/190M ($47.6M/year). That's 27.5% of the cap and Miller isn't even allowed to receive that.

Posting that mainly to illustrate that even if Miller has a catastrophic career (can't stay on the floor, and just declines from here somehow), it'll never be as bad as Batum or Hayward.

Guys I want Miller to be a long term Hornet and a star. But, are they gonna pay him major money when we have no clue if he can stay healthy?

REALLY?

Here’s something I’d like to know: when Brandon got the shoulder sling and returned, did they think his shoulder would heal over time, or was this strictly a brace to put off surgery? It’s an important distinction. If they DID believe it would heal with time and prevention of reinjury…and it didn’t…this is a problem. Remember, this was the SECOND time his shoulder gave out. Surgery isn’t guaranteed to fix this.

If I’m the Hornets I ask Brandon and his reps to give some ground on a long term extension $ amount. Enough to provide the security of an extension, but at a reasonable price that won’t kill the team if that shoulder is chronic.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I pretty much agree with what most of you have laid out. He probably Deserves to get paid somewhere towards the top of Group One and the bottom of group 2. There was a lot of chatter on Twitter about whether or not he would get a rookie Max and I think this at least points out that there's still a pretty decent gap between the guys that signed rookie Max extensions and what we've seen from Miller so far. 5/175 mpj money Seems probably like a reasonable contract for both sides.

If we pay him the max and he stays the same he is now, we are screwed. Our playoff path hinges on Miller - either he improves or we trade him for a floor raising stars that get us to the playoffs.

Yep. He has star upside still but it’s coupled by having the increasing injury risks vs his future paychecks impact equation to consider. Hopefully his management team gives us a reasonable discount to account for the uncertainty regarding his health.

Glad he had it already. How long is his projected recovery?

Well good thing he has 5 months to recover, but it is concerning that he may potentially have back to back off-season rehabing an injury.

Summers off are such an important time for younger players to work on their game.

Brandon has the mindset, and determination, to become a great player. Sadly his injuries may derail any possibility of achieving it. Will he always be cautious due to his shoulder situation? He seemed to play through it with the brace on, so maybe not an issue.

But injuries aside, he must develop a strong handle to take a big leap. His offensive game is too limited; 3’s at an average %, midrange jumpers and occasional finishes at the hoop. Also need to add more strength (like every Hornet except Sion).
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.
