I'm sure it was a cool thing for him and maybe he got something of value out of it, but it didn't "help build" him. My two week guess was wrong, it was a 10-day retreat. If any of us had a rich friend or relative who went and did a 10-day Shaolin temple retreat, then came back and said it changed them or what have you, we'd all roll our eyes.
“Helped build” might be a stretch but I wouldn’t scoff at the effects of this kind of training. To this day a Daoist Philosophy class in college was the most enlightening/life changing I ever took. It had significant effects on the way I process the world on a day to day basis, and I’ve since implemented much of Lao Tzu’s teaching including mindfulness exercises to start the week in every class I teach. I expect Victor came out of that 10 day retreat with significantly altered perspective and/or aptitude

I think your viewpoint is a little dense. It’s not all woo-woo.

I mean I did say he could have gotten something of value out of it. I'm not dismissing the retreat outright; I would be open to something like that myself I didn't have so many places I'd rather go and things I'd rather see/do with the vacation I get. What I find silly is the idea that this 10-day retreat anyone can pay money to go do is going to be truly life-altering, and I also don't really get why it's newsworthy.

I find this really interesting, but equally as corny and self indulgent as it gets

Helped build him is a stretch but so much of basketball is mental, and there's no doubt that broadening your world experiences and challenging your perspectives can be beneficial.
