So, they should indeed be given a wide margin on their picks. Not sure this one will be very good - but it is a second round pick. Just wish I hadn't watched the 2nd round as it turned out to be a nothing burger for the Wiz.

In saying this front office deserves a wide margin for error with its draft picks, would you characterize its drafting record as elite?

I would characterize it as really solid. They certainly are above average - IMO. Picks I liked: Tre, Riley, Sarr, Bilal, Kyshawn, Vuk

Not so much: Bub

That is a pretty solid group, IMO.

Whereas the FA signings are well below average, IMO. I would rather they just stick with what they do well. :dontknow:

I think the drafting is overrated aside from Kyshawn, that was a solid pick, I'll tip my hat there.

Sarr was basically a guy that could have gone first, but kind of got himself to 2, but pretty consensus there, and it's arguable there were better players drafted after him and Sarr is far from being the beast he is described as, can seem. Tre is a in a similar spot.

Riley has gotten so overhyped by putting up scoring stats on terrible teams with everyone out injured. I'm going to have to see more, but this guy is another example of the front office stans overhyping to the point where they think it's reality.

Bilal has been disappointing and is constantly injured. Showy blocks and dunks aren't going to convince me otherwise.

Vuk was solid for a second rounder, but a big who doesn't defend in this day isn't going to get me all hot and bothered.

As for AJ, pretty much him and DP were either one or two (I was on team DP when the initial poll we had going was heavily skewed against him), so again nothing mind blowing about that either.

Kyshawn so far, who is often injured as well, has been the only pick that the front office has shown real industry on.

It's sad when people make arguments for their position and it makes it more likely that I'll take the opposite side. But entertaining nonetheless.

I seriously doubt it. That dude is raw with a capital R. He is a total project on offense.

:) Vuk only played 150 minutes as a rookie!

Sorry. I misread that. I thought you said he would play more than Vukcevic THIS year.

Context matters. Recall where those ‘5 draft picks’ & assets came from. Ditching Beal (golden state top 20 protected pick). Shedding Kuzma. Rehabbing Jared Butler and shipping him to Philly for the 30th pick.

The worst contract in the league with a no trade clause. Kuzma the player most overinflated in self importance. And a guy with a heart condition who was almost out of the league. And now is.

Traded for a HOFer with distressed value but still a ton of game left when healthy.

If anyone said when he took the job that Dawkins would trade Kuzma + Beal for Anthony Davis they’d be laughed out of the trade thread.

Remains to be seen what value AD has but if it ends up less than Kuzma and Beal I’d be gobsmacked.

payitforward wrote:In short, what are you -- & the rest of you complainers -- moaning about? Please explain. I just don't get it.

You do get it. I and several other posters have repeatedly given you substantive responses. The issue is that none of it seems to matter, because you refuse to view the current front office through even a slightly critical lens.

You cannot even acknowledge what the overwhelming majority of the board already has: Carrington was a bad pick. Instead, you characterize any mildly critical comment about him as “picking on” him, then try to turn every criticism of the pick into some straw-man argument about the Deni trade.

Winger never had final say on basketball decisions with the Clippers. Lawrence Frank was President of Basketball Operations and had final authority.

So let’s look at the actual record.

Was it a good move to trade five draft picks for an often-injured 33-year-old star who has publicly expressed skepticism about the team, has yet to play a game for Washington, and is now seeking a long-term extension?

Was it smart to sign Trae Young — a player acquired for essentially nothing five months earlier — to a four-year, $212 million contract when Zach Lowe has reported that Washington was not bidding against any other teams?

Do you think trading Deni Avdija for Carrington plus a likely mid-2029 first was a good trade?

Did you have AJ ranked above Boozer and Peterson as a prospect? What about Caleb Wilson?

Do you think Tre Johnson was a better pick than Collin Murray-Boyles? I am on record having CMB over Tre.

Do you think Carrington was a better pick than Jared McCain? I am on record having McCain over Bub.

Watkins and George look to be future quality rotation NBA players, great. TBD on Sarr & Coulibaly. Fortunately, they were able to convince Sarr to avoid Atlanta, otherwise….the draft record would likely take a major hit.

Obviously, the Wizards are intentionally rebuilding. That is why they are 50-196 over the last three seasons. Wins and losses are not a fair indicator of success right now.

But if we cannot evaluate wins and losses yet, then we have to evaluate process, asset management, draft decisions, and prior track record. So can you point to where Winger or Dawkins had a proven track record of success as the top executive over a franchise before Washington?

I'm not interested in arguing w/ you, compadre. It's not the right moment. I just can't figure out what has got you so exercised at this particular moment.

As well, I have no intention of, no interest in, discussing Will or Winger's past. I could care less. Happy to acknowledge the obvious fact that Will's job was a promotion for him.

As to Bub, you're right; I don't think he was a bad pick. Tell the truth you can't give me a solid reason for me to think so. When I say "a solid reason," btw, I mean numbers not rhetoric. There's no doubt that Ware or Missi have been terrific, but we'd just picked Alex at the 2d pick in the draft; we weren't picking another big.

I assume, btw, that you do think Alex was a good pick? &, for that matter, I suppose you also regard Kyshawn as having been a good pick. Seems likely to me that you would also view Jamir Watkins as a terrific value at his spot in the draft. As well I'm guessing you might consider Will Riley as quite a good grab at #21. Since AJ was overwhelmingly projected to go at #1, & given he has played an NBA minute, I imagine you aren't voicing an objection to him.

Back to Bub: one notable fact is that he leads all players out of the '24 draft in minutes played. Only Castle is even within 20% minutes-wise. I wonder, as a matter of fact, whether any 19-year-old rookie has ever played 2458 minutes.

Wait, I found one -- he played 2606 minutes, & his rookie numbers were no better than Bub's overall, maybe a little worse. His TS% was lower, he got fewer rebounds, he had more assists but also more turnovers. His name was John Wall.

In truth, your attitude towards Bub (not yours alone of course) can't be separated from your attitude towards the Deni trade, even though they are not interdependent issues.

Overall, I feel more excited, hopeful & happy as a Wizards fan than I have god knows how many years. That's enough for me, & I suppose that, overall, my puzzlement amounts to no more than a lack of understanding of why it's not enough for others.

OTOH, I am in no position to dictate anyone else's attitude, & I have no interest in doing so. You in particular have contributed some of the most interesting posts & points of view of all of us, hence in particular I have no reason to seek conflict with you. & anyway, heat rarely produces light! Peace.

Well i don't like AJ, and don't feel he will be better than Boozer. But I see the upside and talent and im not complaining about that pick.

I was pretty positive about extending Young.

Im not down on the AD trade.

I am how ever mad about how we handled the second round. I saw several guards that fell into day two that I had first round grades on. This was a heavy guard draft. It was a good opportunity and we didnt take advantage of that. To be fair thorton who ive been on for a while went way higher than expected. But bradley who I also had a late first grade on was there. Now if we traded up for him, I wouldn't have complained much. There were other bigs available at our picks that didnt require wasting assets to trade up, that imo have a better out look than okapara. So trading up for okapara to me is just an offensive waste of resources.

I acknowledge that maybe the athletic dude who hasn't played ball long could develop later and be a good player but I think there's just as likely a chance he ends up on WWE two in 5 years because he washed out and hes huge and jacked.

Honestly - why these kind of posts? :wordyo:

Ive seen him throw a fit over the Commanders practice squad QB
The fact that sam Hartman was measured for pads after seeing him play for mite than 3 minutes is an absolute travesty of football. I will not apologize for having that absolute correct opinion lol . I mean for the love of God the man couldn't even get a start over Josh Johnson after 3 QBs went down lol.

Yup, just a warm body for SL and camp, still hoping for signs of a legit two-way prospect.

Winning is a mind set. Correct ness is a life style. My grandma always said If you waste a penny you'll waste a 1000. You have to handle the little things that seem stupid like they are as life and death as the big ones. That's how you become a serious front off and become a team that finds its self as a respected winning team for the long hall and nit just a couple years every few decades.

I dont care what his stats look like.

I was okay with the Trae extension mostly because I expected there to be one, but I would have been a lot happier
with 2 years extension and a team option for the 3rd year. If it turns out to still be trade-able after 2-3 years, then
it's still fine. Or if he is more efficient offensively and somehow the team is able to protect him on D.

Now the concern becomes will they re-sign AD to an even bigger contract before he demonstrates if he can play
60-65 games. He is eligible for an extension in Aug. AD, if healthy and playing at a 1st team all-NBA level would be'
the best Bullets-Zards player arguably since Elvin Hayes In the mid 70s, better then MJ was here In DC, better than Gil and
better than Ruland, Moses (Bullets version), Bernard King (Bullets version), or John Wall. I'd say in his prime when healthy,
he was a top 3 player in the league.

It certainly seems like that’s the plan—acquire as many draft picks as possible and build through the draft.

If that’s your strategy, the bar for your draft selections is incredibly high. You have to identify and draft an MVP-caliber/top-10 player, surround them with high-level complementary talent, manage the timeline of the core, and put together a roster that actually fits. I’m skeptical.

Well, if it is the plan, then the Trae signing is inexplicably stupid.

We should be developing our youngsters that can play both sides of the ball. :dontknow:

The MVP is one guy in the league. The convo about MVP is usually only 2-3 deep. That's a remarkably shallow pool.

I do think that's the objective:
2027: Play In
2028: Top 6 in conference
2029 and beyond: Contender

We'll see. Did not get the most out of tanking drafts because we were completely robbed in '23 and '25, but Bilal and Sarr and Tre and Dybantsa isn't a bad pull from 4 tanking seasons, Dybantsa and landing the 1.01 helped to alleviate a decent chunk of the pain, though I'd definitely trade the 1.01 this year, for a top 3 pick in '25 and a top 4 pick in '26 instead. Stealing George and Riley in '24 and '25 was really quite huge too.

With some luck, maybe we land another great player in one of these next 3 or 4 drafts, maybe 2 great players, or at least some more legit complimentary guys. We've got a decent chunk of ammo to build with.

Clint Capela was raw on offense his whole career.

Capella was the comp I also made. As long as we have Trae who whatever his other qualities, can throw a lob
pass with the best of them, Okpara, when/if he plays, can finish lobs.

When grading the FA signings I think we have to consider context:

- up until now we've been trying to lose
- we've been forced to add salary to meet the salary floor.

Sorry. This means nothing to me, other than I guess it speaks to Bub's durability.

Bub did not earn those minutes. He just avoided injury while playing for a team that didn't care at all about winning and was only worried about developing young talent. Bub had an on/off differential of -7.9 his rookie year and -8.6 his second year. He made one of the worst teams in the league that much worse when he was on the floor.

Indeed, his +/- over his first two entire seasons was a total net of -1544. I don't know how to look it up, but my guess is that it's an NBA record for the worst total +/- in a player's first two seasons of all time. It's probably a record by a significant margin. (He led the league in total negative on/off in both of his two seasons. 200 points worse then the next worst guy last year, and 150 points worse than the next worse guy this year.) I'm not saying that the team's dismal performance was all his fault, or even that he shares more than 20% of the blame, but the point is, he didn't earn his minutes. The team was historically bad when he was on the floor. So pointing out his high total minutes played doesn't impress me... at all.

I think this is why some people on this board are lower on Bub than you, PIF. You just look at his box score numbers, and you innately value his production in context of the wins' produced formula, and in that context, he is mediocre to be sure, but not awful. I look at his box score numbers but also the massively negative effect he has on the team when he is on the floor and I can't help but be critical. Tre Johnson, despite his similarly lackluster box score numbers, does not make the team worse when he is on the floor and actually had one of the better on/off differentials on the team until the last month of games when his on/off collapsed because he was playing while less than fully healthy.

All that said, on/off numbers are noisy and I don't want to totally write him off just because of two years of horrific on/off numbers. I hope he can turn it around this year. He seems like a really likeable guy and a hard worker. And I am impressed at his improvement in shooting. But if those terrible on/off numbers persist, I'm going to have to conclude that he is somehow sabotaging the team's performance in ways that aren't showing up in the box score - either his defense or the offensive plays he is not making.

Not quite as old as PiF, but I started watching the Bullets when Earl Monroe was a rookie, the year before Wes arrived.

I'm more hopeful about this team than I can actually remember.

Maybe those hopes will be dashed in the next 1-3 years. There is substantial risk with the vets they
are gambling on. And the rooks. But I love the youth movement even if in hindsight, you could argue for some
different choices. They tore it down to studs. It was past time for a drastic change.
