If Trae misses any time, the team may struggle. Or who knows, maybe Bub comes back a different player and crushes it with better guys around him.

I think with Trae out of the game they will put the ball in the hands of the #1 pick. Surround him with shooters and dunkers. Let him see what he can do.

Nice move .

They swapped out a bad locker room presence for a good locker room presence. A vet that know his role and these young players and coaches already know and trust .

He’ll be good in training camp and practice, and he’ll play the right way in the spot minutes he’s on the floor.

Has zero effect on our rotation or the minutes going into to our young players.

Yeah, Dallas did this with Flagg last year and struggling through it probably helped him develop, or speed up his development. Wizards are actually trying to win games though. I'm not sure it makes sense for us to do it with AJ if we're trying to balance player development with gunning for the playoffs. I think we at least need to give him another capable ball handler to take some pressure off. Maybe that's Bub or maybe someone else.
Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot? Urinal cakes!

Don't mind the move, it sounds like it's a 1 year deal with a partial guarantee in the 2nd. Spotrac has his at $5.5 million this year, which is below what Russell was making, but Cap Sheets has it at $6.1. We often talk about the talent on the team not realizing we don't have vets. AD and Middleton are the only ones over 30, so I feel like he's going to be good for the locker room.

I would sign Gill to be a coach.

I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but of our wings, Middleton by far is the best as a small ball 4 with his old man strength, length, and experience.

I like this a lot to tell the truth. Note, as well, that we still have 1 open roster spot. & that Cam is still a Wizard. Still room for more moves....

Defensively, he is solid, but he doesn't rebound. I like him better at the 3.

Middleton may not get the rebound, but my guess is his man won't get an offensive rebound either. But I agree that particularly Champagnie is a better rebounder.

I've read that he'll make 5.4 this season, so he plus Ayton fit into the trade exception. Which is part of the reason the Wizards were willing to give up one 2nd here: partly for the good vet, partly to act before the TPE expired, preserving the full MLE and creating a new 6M exception.

Yup. I forgot about the Kelly Olynyk trade to the Spurs creating the $13M TPE last July.

Good work by Dawkins.

We can get more 2nd rounders later. Uncle Ted can buy some too.

So, Year 2 is practically non-guaranteed as well. Good deal!

Don't know why you'd want to do that with a rookie. He should be working, foul line in to start.
And sends wrong message to the rest of the team, "we're valuing AJs development ahead of yours".
Didn't matter with Dallas/Flagg because the team wasn't going anywhere and everybody knew it.

I think it's simply going to be backup PG by committee.

Any of Bub, Riley, Kyshawn, AJ and even Tre and Bilal may have a hand in initiating the offense when Trae sits. We will see who gets the hang of it first and seizes the role.

That and I disagree with the premise that asking AJ to attack on ball somehow does AJ or the team a disservice.

You want a player to have reps at the thing that got them to the league so they develop confidence. AJ has been an on ball player and showed he can not only score efficiently, but spray the ball around to the right guys without too many turnovers considering his high usage. Here he gets better shooters and finishers to flush the ball than his teammates at BYU. If he’s who he was drafted to be, an offensive driver who forces defenses to foul or scramble, then his effectiveness on ball should give his teammates wide open shots.

The team has been consistent in trying to give players opportunities to succeed at what they do best. First. Then expand their roles as they get comfortable. AJ is a load with the ball. Give him the ball.

In the starting line up you’re asking him to defer to Trae and learn on the fly a totally different way to play than he’s ever tried before. Off ball movement to get open. Spot up shooting. Catch and shoot from range. I saw him fade when Mikel Brown had control.

This offensive philosophy was an ideal fit for AJ before we got Trae. Anybody of any size who had the ball could drive up court with it if they had the mismatch or were confident. That’s how Deni broke out.

I expect we will still see a lot of that and rely on Trae to adjust to an off ball role at times. But when he’s out of the game, that is our entire game plan I think. It’s one that AJ is particularly good at, it’s what got him drafted #1.

wtf are they doing? Yeah, Middleton won't take any minutes away from young guys, just like we are just taking a flyer on Trae Young and not extending him, just like we're gonna get a first round pick for Malcolm Brogdon. Why is anyone giving them the benefit of the doubt still? This is burning assets to get worse

Are you crying about burning assets that they built up specifically to field a team???
You harp on all the negative, but if you can't see they've done way more good than bad, you don't want to.....

Don't need a benefit of the doubt.....
We're going to be good whether you like how they doing it or not.....
