LAC-DAL: Roster Rebalance

Both DAL and LAC are undergoing complete tear down rebuilds. Clips are in the unenviable position of having no control of their FRPs for 3 more years, but still have some youth to develop, so outright sucking is far from ideal. DAL has excess developmental bigs especially post Risacher trade and Lively is likely their starting C of the future and LAC has excess guards and badly need size

DAL trades Gafford (3yr/55mil left) + PJ Washington (4yr/88mil left)

LAC trades BroLo (expiring 9.2mil) + Derick Jones Jr (expiring 10.5mil) + S&T Benedict Mathurin (multi year deal 1st year starting around 17-18mil) + minor draft capital to balance the long term salary disparity.

DAL gets a young super athlete microwave 6th man who might become a starter quality down the line on a very reasonable deal, 2 expirings, and opens up a shitton of development time for the youth. DJJ can easily be spun elsewhere for more draft capital as he's a very useful role player for any number of teams. Also the team gets a ton of future cap space to re-allocate as needed (re-sign Lively, max FA hunting). Can also sub in Dunn for DJJ if Math's salary demands are higher per year to help match salaries, also reduce outgoing draft capital to balance.

LAC gets a stand in C until Yanic recovers from injury (he's the developmental C of the future), a solid starting quality 3/4 tweener, and helps bolster the lack of youthful size. Adding 2 solid players to help the team be a solid competitor for the playin slot. I dont see the Clips being a max FA hunter any time soon, so the loss of cap space isnt a high factor to me. Would prefer to send Dunn out instead of DJJ, but either option is open. I see Wagler being slowly brought along off the bench as physically he is FAR from NBA ready.

I don't see Dallas trading two starting caliber players for scraps, Mathurin and a couple 2nds.

Confused about the idea that Dallas is in a complete tear down? According to Stein several teams called on Kyrie only to be rebuffed. We know Gafford would have takers considering the free agency center market, yet he's still here. And then there are other vets still on the roster.

I don't see Mathurin as superior to Gafford or Washington and both guys will be in their prime over the course of their contracts so age isn't any kind of gain here. I think Dallas passes pretty easily here.

Now if they like Mathurin and want to balance their roster, maybe a S&T for Washington has some legs. May run into some BYC issues though.

Don’t think Dallas would value the DJJ for PJ swap, so would need to know what the third team gives up for DJJ?

Gaff and Klay for Brolo and Mathurin?

Not sure about Clips salary situation, but seems somewhere interesting to me.

Hmm i guess i misread the DAL situation. Ya'll got so many young bigs and big swings incoming i figure you'd want to carve out PT for em (Aldama, Morez Johnson, Risacher) to see if they have higher potential ceiling than the existing players who are already paid market value (Gafford/PJ), not to mention Lively is likely your future C and ya'll just hold his RFA rights hostage to lowball him by scaring off other suitors. Hell if Risacher pops off, ya'll got his RFA rights to play the same game again. If DAL doesnt value opening up PT for the young incoming bigs and future salary savings to chase higher impact player next off season, then yea, there wont be much interest in this offer. Definitely can be a play in team as is, but it's more of an upside play by getting Mathurin who might get better and become your best guard if Kyrie leaves and see how the new incoming bigs do with increased PT, instead of giving it to players you already know who they are (PJ, Gafford).

Clips can open up potentially almost 2 max slots next offseason if Ingram opts out and letting BroLo, Dunn, DJJ, Dick all expire. Can easily reach the 2 max slots if they waive all/most their unguaranteed deals (Rui, Miller, Sanders, Christie) and/or stretch waive IJax. Clippers salary situation is VERY clean next offseason. It's why i wouldnt mind having Gafford/PJ on the books, cuz the wings/guards are all dirt cheap except for Garland who's expiring next offseason. Im just trying to find a way to surround Wagler with good solid vets to help along his development, dude is a project, who's got alot of skills and moxie, but has a woefully underdeveloped body for the NBA.

Clips are doing the same RFA game with Mathurin, who's likely to re-sign for like a 2 year 36-40mil deal with 2nd year team option. No team with cap or a full NTMLE will bother to sign him due to matching rules. Maybe Mathurin would be willing to test his luck in DAL since ya'll dont have any up and coming guards that you're focusing on developing (unlike the Clips with Wagler and already having Garland). Thats basically what popped into mind for this trade idea.
