Indiana - Dallas - LAL - Minnesota

Post#1 » by Godaddycurse » Thu Jul 30, 2026 4:13 am

Indiana trade: Toppins, Walker, 2027 UTAH 2nd
Indiana receive: Washington

LAL out: Knecht, WAS 2031 2nd
LAL in: Walker

Dallas trade: Washington
Dallas receive: Green, Knecht, Evans, 2027 UTAH 2nd, 2031 WAS 2nd

Minnesota trade: Evans, Green
Minnesota receive: Toppins

Why for Indiana: Add a big wing defender to round out forward rotation
Why for LAL: roll the dice on a former lotto pick spacing PF
Why for Minnesota: add much needed PF depth/spot starter
Why for Dallas: clear forward glut and get a prospect and 2 seconds

No for DAL, we traded a first for PJ, now give him up for 2 seconds? Not to mention DAL already have 16 men roster, will be even worse after this 1 for 3 trade.

I’d do it for MIN once Green can be aggregated.

(Wow - I just saw Obi shot 91.3 FT% last year!)

I assume klay would be bought out and probably sasser too. Pick one of knecht or green to keep.

Evans was the 33rd pick, so him +2 seconds = late first to me

DAL just trade for Sasser, and won't buy him out, before seeing his play. PJ trade costs a 2027 DAL top 2 protected #1, in which the value >>> 3 seconds.

DOnt see a prospect in what Dalals is taking back and then having to cut players just to get two seconds. Zero incentive for Dallas to give up PJ here. Not to mention having to take back a garbage guard who was already here

My opinion is that lakers can neither worry about or waste resources on a backup pf before they have a starting one. Now if it were toppin or pj things would get intresting

He's not worth losing PJ, plus having to cut multiple players because they are taking on junk in this deal

As a Mavs fan I just don't like losing so much value in a 1-3 or 1-4 trade for PJ. Those quarters just aren't worth the dollar, imo. I understand PJ isn't the greatest, but he is tailor made for the playoffs, and it sounds like Dallas is pushing for the playoffs this year.

I think the deal is fine.. I might be in the minority but see PJ as more of a neutral asset because of his contract which is a bit long/rich. Mavs should be giving more minutes to younger guys Aldama and Morez Johnson.

PJ is really solid and all, but I just don't think Indy can afford to lock up so much salary for the long-term on their 6th/7th guy. I think Obi/Walker are much more likely to be moved this year or next in a salary cutting move than to be condensed and locked up longer? Indy may pay the tax this year, but I'm not assuming they'll go into the 2nd apron next year, which this kind of move (and then backfilling out the roster) pretty much pushed them into?

PJ is definitely a better overall player. It's a hard one. If money were not an issue, it seem an automatic yes. But since money is an issue, I think they'd have to dump him next year?

my math have them around 212M for 10 players with PJ instead of Toppins so they should be able to stay under 2nd apron next year

They're already at $212m for next year as is. Swapping for PJ adds another $5.5 on top of that for 11 total players. The top 8 players on the roster combine for $210m there, so not easy to cut around the edges. Clearly gotta be over the 1st apron just filling out the roster.

I'm hoping they just don't salary dump Jarace/Sheppard midseason to get under the tax this year. I really can't plan on them shooting well past the 1st apron next year. :dontknow:

Preaching to the choir. They really SHOULD pay the tax. But 25 years of past history tells us otherwise, ya know? And committing to it MULTIPLE years is especially tough to just bank on, as they haven’t done it once since Reggie retired…. :dontknow:

But also, it’s hard to commit to that level of salary and long term salary commitment for a guy who ideally in the playoffs will play 20 or so mpg? Is it so much better than Obi and his 15-20 minutes of solid play?

I think Indiana got its backup SF with Oubre and we're happy with Toppin as our backup PF. There's definitely competition between Walker and Sheppard for a spot on the second unit, but I think we're going to let that play out before we shop either of them. If we do make a move, it will cut payroll not add to it.

i think he is worth 5M more than Obi/Oubre for his 2 way play come playoff time. I think theres bit of overlap between Obi/Oubre and it leaves pacers weak on D

If they didn’t have Nesmith, Siakam, and Zubac playing ahead of them in playoff time, I’d agree. But it’s likely we always have 2 of those 3 on the court at all times in the playoffs, so defense isn’t as much a worry?

But I would love it if we were all of a sudden a team that said “screw the money, let’s push all the chips in”. I just haven’t ever seen Indy ever consider that type of approach.
