I have RJ and Lavine as similar level player, so TOR should compensate SAC for Poeltl extra years.

I disagree that players like him should ever give up money and give up flexibility towards getting paid. I don't see Spo liking him and think he could get glued to the bench and that killing his market next summer far more than the Kings choosing to play younger guys would. Not sure Detroit would love him either.

Just no upside to him taking a buyout and potential downside. Maybe he is just a taxMLE guy moving forward and it won't matter, but I promise you he doesn't think that. And he would be the one making the decision.

He shouldn't give up money, he'll get paid with the new team.
I disagree with the rest, he's been forgotten for 3 years now, he needs to showcase himself, he's not doing that in Sac.
He should prefer to be in a place he's wanted and promised a role, for the price of losing his bird rights, it's a no brainer IMO.

The problem is a buyout only makes sense for the Kings if he gives back enough money for it to make sense and that's what's difficult to see before the season even starts and he's cashed his first check.

The Kings already cut DDR loose. They actually need someone to put the ball in the basket. He's at least a theoretical trade asset on an expiring that size. It's hard to see before the deadline.
This will end badly

Detroit have their MLE, and MIA have portions from it, they can pay him, worst case, he geta paid vet min, that's 4M, I'd give 5-6 M in Cali and go play in no state tax FL or TX for the vet min.

He is not a trade asset. He could be a trade tool. But he's not worth his salary or close to it. There is no value there. But they shouldn't give up the flexibility either until after the deadline.

Just strongly disagree with him on a buyout here and will be stunned if we see one before the deadline. And I think he passes even then.

Expiring contracts look very different from the perspective of a trade partner at the deadline than they do in the summer. Teams seasons don't go as well as hoped for. They decide they want off contracts they thought they were fine keeping. That's why I used the theorerical qualifier. The best offer for LaVine now may not be the best offer for LaVine in January.

I don't see why the Kings who have very little in terms of assets don't at least avail themselves of the opportunity to see what happens.
This will end badly

Why do the Kings agree to pay him $45M+ to go play for another team? I guess I just don't understand where that expectation comes from.

If the Leonard trade falls through, Ive wondered if there is a framework deal of Ingram + Barrett + Poeltl for LaVine + Sabonis.

Det used most of their MLE to absorb IJoe. Only 3.7m left which is less than the league min contract for Lavine.

Miami can use their remaining 9m MLE but be it's going to really close to the hard cap 1st apron and deeper into the tax and need to fill a 14th roster spot so have to safe room for that with only being 10.6m of apron space left.

Kings media with conflicting reports this week. One said that Kings have not promised him a role (I personally don't buy it). If that is the case, I think he would be better off sacrificing 5-10 million and making his way to a team like Detroit or Miami where he makes up a portion of the money.

What works out better for him next year?

Playing on a Kings team that sits him half the year, wins 20-25 games, he continues his career loser streak and his averages go down significantly (again if you believe the reporting)
Or
Sign a 1+1 with Detroit, be the #2 option, average 20 on good efficiency, win 55 games, and prove you can fit on a winning team.

LaVine and a 1st for Jrue Holiday would be a good deal for both sides IMO.

Jrue is a much better mentor type than Russ. And a better player now.

Blazers can continue their plan to leave Portland under cover of night.

Sacramento might be the worst team in the league this year. I cant see any way they spend a 1st for a mentor

Im guessing he just waits until February. Kings will exhaust options to see what they can get for him in the market (taking on longer term money for assets), and if the juice isnt worth the squeeze, he'll be bought out. I dont see any way he ends the year on the Kings

This is one of those ideas that sounds good in theory but very rarely actually works out. Most of the time once you're a buyout guy, it's hard to shed that label. I can't honestly remember a time where a guy took a buyout to "showcase" in a better situation and ended up getting a substantial contract afterwards.

They don't save meaningful money or cap space. The incentive to force feed rookies unearned minutes and rack up Ls went out the window with the lottery changes. As I said earlier, LaVine can still put the ball in the hoop. He'll still have theoretical trade value at the deadline.

Lavine's big pay days are behind him, regardless of what he does, imo. He's a 30 year old 1-way poor playmaking guard with availability issues. He's gonna be playing for sub midlevel money for the rest of his career, but his best way to get paid is still to get showcased on a team that wins and demonstrate that he can contribute to winning. He still shouldnt give back any money that he cant make in the buy out market

That have that reverse protected Spurs pick they could spend, seeing as how there's no chance the Spurs are bad.

This would also help POR re-sign Deni.

Tend to agree with this. More than likely hes MLE at best.

While not the same situation.. I would have thought powell was destined for 10-15 million rest of his career, then he kills it last year and now gets a payday in Chicago.

I'm also not sure of any scenarios where a 50 million dollar guy has ever been bought out, so hard to really look at past examples. Id think if lavine has any chance at another nice payday, its going to be showcasing on another team this season.
