DDV to Memphis
DiVincenzo 12.5 m (1 year)
for
Initial proposal: Pippen 2.5m (2 years), Hendricks 7.8m (1 year, RFA), 2,5m cap space
Option 2: Pippen 2.5m (2 years), Russel (6m, 1 year), AJ Johnson (2.3m, 2 years)
Minnesota chose Ayo as their bench scorer, so they turns DDV into a cheap and solid backup PG in Pippen and a PF prospect in Hendricks, hoping he will fill into the Reid or Randle role. Option 2: Hendricks is replaced with Russel, a familiar face, and AJ Johnson.
Memphis eases the roster crunch and turns two young players into a solid veteran who can support the young core and be flipped for assets by the deadline.

Pointless. DDV likely is not back by the deadline and we could get more assets from Pippen more than likely anyways.

I am testing the other side. We might be able to insert AJ Johnson or replace Hendricks with Murray and Russel.

MIN owe something, but have nothing, I'd offer swap of a swapped pick

Not sure what you mean? Minn has no value really to give so cannot squeeze blood from a stone here. Very likely DDV will have zero trade value this season at the deadline. We can just cut unwanted players and trade players like Pippen for value.

Are you aware that DDV tore his Achilles and probably won't even play this season?

I thought he is coming back in January-February. If not, OP doesn`t make much sense for Memphis.

I have added Option 2. In my view Pippen`s value is 2 2nds at best. Instead of waiving AJ Johnson and Russel, Memphis is getting an expiring salary to be able to stay active at the trade deadline. Some teams might see DDV as a positive asset assuming he is able to recover by the start of the postseason. We don`t have much time for Pippen anyway.

Not that this makes much sense for Memphis - since best case is DDV makes it back just before the playoffs - but DLo will not be welcome back in MN, familiar face or not. I believe his comments after he left was "the coaching staff held him back".

What about Kris Murray instead of Dlo?

Can they just take a longer deal in exchange for him? I'm sure theres a bad contract to be taken back

Yeah, it feels like there's something here, but Minny would have to figure out some way to scrape together some kind of value. It probably works better with a team that has a slightly overpaid guy on a two year deal...

Re: DDV to Memphis
Kris Murray can’t be aggregated in a trade until later this month, and D’Angelo Russell not until September 8th, but this is certainly a deal that could wait.
MIN won’t take Russell. He became a toxic player in MIN when they brought in Gobert. Rudy can only catch lobs, and DLo refused to change his game at all, then would openly mock Gobert on the court and on the locker room. It doesn’t mean he couldn’t be bought out by MIN instead of MEM.
And this is likely the crux of the trade. The Grizzlies have like 19-20 players under guaranteed contracts, and DLo and Murray seem like obvious candidates for buy outs. Is it worth it to pickup an expiring player and his Bird rights, or simply cut them themselves? Spotrac has them $5 mil under the cap, so they may not even want to maintain a salary slot? That said, it’s never good to have dead money on your books.
Finally, the word out of Minnesota is that they have no plans to trade DiVincenzo. This is a bit surprising, because contenders generally want to maximize their payroll, especially when they have a roster hole. DDV is only hopeful he will be back for the playoffs next May, and they also have payroll invested in LaMelo and Ayo Dosunmu. However, the Wolves regularly say they want him on the team because of his grit, his work ethic, his leadership, and his complimentary skills to Ant. The Wolves may be more willing to do this deal with their other expiring wing, Josh Green, and he can contribute in the regular season.

Re: DDV to Memphis
I will add a couple other notes
1. There are people on the MIN boards that like Hendricks as a PF option, though I’m not sure the team prefers him over Josh Green, and definitely not DDV. They say they like Green’s willingness to be a supporting player.
2. MIN has two roster spots left, and no one they really want to drop, so I’d avoid 3-for-1’s
3. All MIN could offer for value is horcruxing an already swapped pick, but this is unlikely to produce much value to a team like MEM, though it will make casual fans look on the deal more favorably.
4. Most teams have already filled their rosters at this point in the season, so it’s unlikely MEM has many ways to trade their way down to a 15-man roster. Several players are going to simply be bought out. If MIN and MEM can’t find a deal that actually improves the Grizzlies, I think it’s possible that they will just scoop up one of their cast offs for some young PF depth on a vet min deal. I think they have like eight players who’s best position is PF.

That would be remarkably fast. It took Tatum ten months, and his was an unusually fast recovery.

Re: DDV to Memphis
Somebody should do this ...but I don't see anyone on MEM to make it make sense. MIN is very win-now and should look to move DDV for someone who can help a bit (a vet) from a team who is not looking so urgently...and MIN likely has to add a srp or two.
DDV into TPE and Russell to MIN (he at least MIGHT be able to contribute)...MIN should add a couple srps - but they really don't have any to spare.
I like the concept, but MEM may not be the right partner.
Tough one as MIN really doesn't have any draft capital to use either. DDV is expiring and out, so it SHOULD be strictly a pay (by MIN) to swap him out for something they can use now...but they have nothing to sweeten it.

Russell definitely isn’t the guy for MN.
When he was traded he threw the team under the bus and is persona non grata here. He also doesn’t play a position of need.
MUCH rather wait out DDV’s injury than bring DLo back at any cost. Even as a vet min FA signing.
I don’t see how he’s worth a couple of 2nds either.

Re: DDV to Memphis
Finch had a SL interview, was kinda explicit that they wanna keep Donte and not just move him for any random warm body at the 4. I think they're looking at the current landscape in the west and trying to pivot to a style of 1 big and 4 perimeter guys that can play fast and launch threes. If you're going up against Fox/Castle/Harper/Champagnie/Wemby, is Hendricks helping you more than Donte?

Did you like the effect of Ayo? The guy made a huge leap by the age of 24-25. Hendricks is 2 years younger than Yaxel, there is a good chance he will repeate the Reid success and likely even exceed it. He has a nice 3pt mechanic - i believe it will come. Having said that, I totally understand the reason for keeping DDV.
