Cleveland/Hornets

Cleveland: Schroeder
Charlotte: Royce O’Neal

Charlotte needs a point guard and Cavs need forwards. Helps make it easier for Cavs to move Merrill to give them the necessary cap space to sign Watson for 20M a year.

Charlotte doesn’t need more seconds, but they are owed 1-2 here imo.

I see Royce getting a lot of burn for us honestly. Lee is probably thinking about cranking out 55 3PA a game with this roster, and O'Neale does help that cause

Want to save money for Watson? send us a 2nd or two and we'll send DFS instead, who can be cut and stretched across 7 years (under $2M per year). If he's the salary matching going back to Denver, I see them taking advantage of that.

Cavs could do that without making a trade and cutting Schroeder via stretch. If they were giving seconds they’d want a full TPE.

can't cut it down by nearly as much. Schroeder is guaranteed a bit over $19M and it can be stretched across 5 years, so he'd be eating about $3.9M a year in dead cap. DFS having two fully unguaranteed years and a lower salary this year means his dead cap number is $1.9M a year for 7 years.
Don't know the exact number in luxury tax savings that the $2M difference makes for the Nuggets ownership, but it's substantial and well worth a 2nd. idc if that 2nd comes from CLE or DEN, but it'll need to come up from somewhere.

Schroder for DFS (or O'Neale) does nothing for either the Nuggets or the Cavs as far as logistics of a Watson S&T are concerned. The Cavs need more savings than such a trade would provide in order to absorb Nnaji which allows the Nuggets to take back a player on a very small contract and finish a S&T below the first apron. Then the Cavs still have to move Strus to a 4th team with little or no salary coming back to absorb Watson. Honestly, I'm growing increasingly skeptical that it happens.

As far as the merits of Schroder for DFS on its own, the Cavs would need be pretty convinced that DFS's performance from last season was the result of injury versus being washed. The idea of trading for DFS because his buyout is cheaper seems kind of silly. Whether it's Schroder or DFS, the Cavs should be hoping that they can get regular season minutes out of those guys and/or they can provide emergency minutes in the playoffs. Moving an expiring contract into a multi-year obligation shouldn't be a thing with either player unless there's a pressing need.
This will end badly

Schroeder for DFS straight up and using the stretch provision to be able to just outright sign Watson for 4/80 million would make sense to me or at the very least sign Kuminga.
