Watched Phil Hughes throw and was impressed with his fastball. After his leg injury in May, he said his heater was 91-92 instead of the usual 93-95 it is.

For anybody who has ever seen Hughes pitch in AA, it was clear without knowing anything about pithcing mechanics that the leg/ankle injuries were still hurting him physically or at the very least mentally in the back of his mind. And with that he was still our best pitcher in September by FAR, pitched us into the playoffs, and picked up the W in our only win against Cleveland...all at 21 years old. We are going to see great things in this kid's career.

how he blocks out the criticizm of NY media i think is just as key as they physical part of the game

He is mature way beyond his years, I really don't worry about him mentally dealing with NY. By reading his blog, you see how laid back and relaxed he is. He is aware of what he should be, he knows he shouldn't have a 2.5 ERA this season and I think that is all he worries about. As long as he is on track in terms of development with what he and the Yankees expect, he won't let the fans get to him. And truthfully, I think the whole Johan thing may even make fans embrace him even more.

I just hope he learns how to pitch better with runners on. He seemed nervous many times last season with a guy on 1st or 2nd.

Yeah, I feel that same way. But what else can we expect when his WHIP through the minors was 0.8, he wasn't necessarily used to it as ridiculous as that may sound.

Glad to see that Moose is helping out Hughes and Kennedy. He may not have the arm that he used to, but he still has the smarts and the savvy. These guys will get better just from listening to him.
And I'll wait until I see Phil pitch before I say he is back. Articles are nice, but I want to see the late life on his fastball and the sick curveball he used to have for myself.
