Trading a wing who was fourth or fifth on the depth chart and was unlikely to get much playing time for someone who might earn minutes at a position of need (guard) was a good move.

Think of it as buying a high SRP for $2.5M (the cost differential between Whitmore and Mann).

The Wizards swapped a 3rd string SF with perceived upside for a 3rd string combo guard with no upside but at least they are familiar with his work ethic, etc and got a 2nd rd pick and cash to boot.

Its a fairly uninspiring move but it only becomes worrisome if he was acquired to a key piece of the rotation because like Payit says, he's never been any good and tbh he's probably only still in the league due to his guaranteed contract.

Charlotte had Mann as their 5th guard last season. Hopefully he's our 6th guard this season as insurance for Will Riley & Bub Carrington and to eat up some of the non-competitive minutes of games.

If Mann earns minutes then it's really bad news for Will Riley & Bub Carrington's development. It means Will couldn't continue to play on ball and Bub can be officially classified as a massive bust.

Tre Mann from last year was terrible, as in not playable. Tre Mann pre-back injury was a useful rotation player, arguably equivalent to Cam Whitmore.

I don't know which Tre Mann we are getting. It's probably the unplayable version.

I think the Wiz are confident that their medical team is better than other organizations. Thus they may rehab Mann as they did Bey and recoup added value for him.

This is good news for Bub. It would have been hard to find anyone worse. Not a coincidence that Charlotte was much better once Mann was benched.

I continue to hope the organization knows NBA players better than I do. I thought of Mann as a combo shooting guard type, but hopefully he can play the point.

I do hope Bub and Riley step up their PG game and we don't need him except as a "break glass in case of emergency" type, but I also hope to be proved wrong and have him be the next Justin Champagne type but as a PG.

Dawkins was in OKC when the team drafted Mann. It’s possible that he could have “wanted” him here.

It was a way to move a guy buried on the depth chart for a guy who plays a position with less depth. Plus get a pick plus a little bigger contract for filler in a deal at the trade deadline if needed. In other words, don't lose any sleep over it either way.

Agree 100% - I think the concept of trading for someone for their contract value to use in a trade in the future is overlooked too often. Agree with Benjy here and think that may be at the top of the list or 2nd after the pick.

He should be no better than the 11th man. It also can't hurt to have another veteran in the locker room that likely is a good influence.

The Zards are hoping to get the Tre Mann who was starting to emerge when he was traded from OKC to Charlotte late in the 2023-24 season and who was off to a great start in 2024-25 when he had a serious back injury.

Dawkins has shown that he has an excellent eye for underrated talent—Ky, Riley, and Champagnie being the most obvious examples. So I’m trusting him with Mann, who Dawkins knows both on and off the court.

Tre Mann is currently listed as healthy, though his past year has been heavily impacted by a significant disc herniation in his lower back originally suffered during the 2024–25 season, alongside minor subsequent issues like a knee contusion and hip soreness.

Mann suffered a serious lower back injury that required surgery and sidelined him for a large portion of his tenure with the Charlotte Hornets, derailing what looked like a breakout campaign.

My guess is that Dawkins thinks of Mann more like Jaden Hardy or Dillon Jones than like Champagnie. He is a guard, yes, but he's not the kind of guard they'd actually need: a defender and/or distributor. Who knows -- time will tell!

Good stuff Zards -- Mann had quite a good year overall in '23-24. If he can get back to that, then for sure he'll turn out a quality low-cost acquisition. Still an "if", obviously, but he makes sense as a low-cost acquisition.
