Unfortunately, they backed themselves into a position where they are shedding talent for future assets during the prime of a MVP player. The level of cap mismanagement here is just awful.

The problem with contending for a half decade or longer is that it's all but inevitable that you're going to run into cap issues and be depleted of assets. The Murray extension is the one where you didn't need the benefit of hindsight, but if Braun doesn't have a bad seasons immediately coming of his extension, things could have played out very differently.

The Nuggets didn’t have to trade their 2027 and 2029 1sts to OKC for late firsts and salary relief. I’d argue those were two large tax related moves that caused the depletion and weren’t primarily about getting better. And yes the tax issues matter, but it’s not being smart about when to pay it, they just refused to pay it.

If you exclude the flexibility benefit from lowering the tax bill, yes, but there comes a point where if you don't make those moves, you can end up spending yourself into less attractive choices later. The entire reason we have aprons is that teams didn't want to have to emulate the Warriors model where they were spending twice the cap for a half decade or more. The Murray extension was the original sin here, but I don't fault tax teams from moving on from guys who aren't worth their contracts.

I think Denver should've shipped out Nanji, Braun, and a 1st to Charlotte for that TPE and get out of cap hell (maybe take back Royce O'Neal). Then Charlotte could look to rehabilitate Brauns value.

It's about all they can offer, but they really need to dump that contract rather than stretch it over 3.

They should keep Whitmore we need guys like him. If anything move Porter Jr for a 2nd.

I don't think any contending team needs a player like Whitmore. They need guys that will play as part of the team.

But more importantly, they need the apron space that Whitmore provides to offer Harden the $30m contract they're reported to have agreed to?

Charlotte's got Kon, Miller, and McNeeley already. They're maybe one of the most unlikely teams to take on Braun's huge and long new deal.

They didn't have a tradeable first until the Cavs sent them one and no team is trading an unprotected first for a strait salary dump unless a player is bad, bad. Braun could bounce back this year. The Nuggets need win-now help in any trade where they send that pick out.

The local reporters for potential trade partners insisting it would cost a first to move Strus look rather silly now.

Not a fan of this deal for the Clips. They have a logjam of mins at the SG/SF and Strus's injury history is worrisome.

Unless there's a follow up move of S&T Mathurin for a real big, i'm not sure why the priority isnt to pilfer draft capital by offering the services of the TPE instead of a potentially useful albeit overpaid player.

Unless there's 2way SnT Mathurin + stuff for Duren, the roster imbalance for the Clips is awful.

Also im still shocked that DEN is still stuck over the 2nd apron despite losing PWat with nothing coming back. If theyre that desperate to drop down the 2nd apron, how about CamJo + Nnaji + CLE FRP for DJJ + Dunn. Significant cap savings and get 2 useful role players at positions of need.

I don't think acquiring Strus is the issue, it's the bizarre move to re-sign Beal that came before this. Now it's starting to feel like we've once again given Lue too many aging toys to play with when we need to be laser-focused on developing the young core.

A lot of the disappointment from some fans is that we aren't the ones getting Watson, but like, given both our history and our current situation, did anyone really want to be the team trading an unprotected pick away just to gamble that he's going to be the player he was for that one month from now on? Personally, after digging into what all the hype was based on and what Nuggets fans who actually watched him outside of that one month have said about him, I was hoping we wouldn't get him. Overpaying for someone based on a specific stretch of games instead of their overall body of work is often a recipe for disaster.

Yea i was only gungho on getting PWat if the cost was just DJJ and a SRP, i felt at that price it's worth a shot. Being forced to cough up a future FRP (protected or not) just isnt worth the gamble.

100% agree on Beal, complete waste of money and a roster spot. Looks like Mathurin is completely on the way out now. I mean at least SnT trade him somewhere for a big man or any sort of assets before you tank his trade value with these moves.

He can... assuming he was willing to sign a small enough contract to tempt a team to deal. Which he clearly doesnt, so now it's likely he's staring down a QO or nothing situation.

Nnaji fits into Chicago’s Room Exception and there aren’t any useful players left to grab at that salary slot. There’s a deal to be made with the Bulls.

Nnaji, 2030 swap rights for Miller?

Nnaji has 2 years left on his deal at around 7.5mil per (holy crap thats more than i expected). I'd say 2 SRPs wont cut it to eat him outright, at bare minimum any team that eats him should demand 3, hell possibly 4 SRPs assuming no return salary. Nnaji is playing basically at a min contract player, so that's alot of dead value that needs to be bridged in order to dump him.

He's been basically an afterthought throughout the entire FA process...if he had value to return even minor assets, there probably would have been some FA interest in him.

I think it's telling that LAC would rather have Max Strus and the corpse of Bradley Beal than Mathurin

I mean, getting him back for the QO isnt a bad outcome. Just means the other players on the roster are more available to trade for the highest offer.

I mean shoot, any team that offers him a reasonable deal is pretty much a shoe in to steal him (like 3 years 39mil). But youre right, its been crickets. If i'm the Clips id sign him to a 1+1 deal (starting at 10mil) so that he can preserve his bird rights and that i can trade him, otherwise on the cheaper QO his trade value is nil as he can refuse trades due to taking away his bird rights.

Mathurin and his agent is NOT having a good offseason.

Mathurin would also have the right to veto any trade if he signed a 1+1 deal, as if he was traded, he would lose his full Bird Rights and would drop back down to "non-Bird Rights". It would likely only matter much if he blew up a bit after a trade.

If I'm Kuminga or Mathurin, I'm seriously considering playing in Europe this season and re-entering the RFA market (in Mathurin's case) next summer after a whole bunch of expiring contracts drop off the books. The Kings alone are sitting on $70M in expiring deals. The Bucks have another $40M. There are a handful of other teams who project to have around $50M in cap.
