Matsui trade idea
Padres are looking for a corner OF-er. Yankees need bullpen help. What about a Matsui for Heath Bell and Scott Hairston swap? Matsui steps in and is the heart of their lineup. He will bring them cash from Japan. Hairston is just a 4th OF for us and Heath Bell can set up. He had a few saves last year so he might be able to spot save for us to save up Mariano for October. Padres still have Cla Meredith and a few other guys for their pen. Thoughts? -Jitpal

So If Padres offered Peavy instead you wouldn't want that?
Not going to happen, obviously.
Best thing to do with Matsui is give him a bat and put him into the lineup: LF, DH, 1B, wherever.

Matsui isn't a bad outfielder. He certainly has a better arm than Damon.
Matsui is one of the steadiest, most professional hitters in the league. He reminds me of Paul O'Neil. I don't see why people are proposing to trade him for crap.

The Padres generally operate within a limited budget range. For them to take on that much money and not give back a contract in return, it'd probably take a good deal of Yankee money (or further contract swapping) to get the job done.
Not that he wouldn't be worth it; the Padres could use a replacement for Giles after this season and Matsui's signed through 2009 for reasonable money ($13MM base in both 2008 and 2009). That gives the team just enough time to figure out if Headley's a viable corner outfield option without being taxed offensively.
Although, I'd probably say Matsui has a bit more trade value than a relief pitcher and a fourth OF type, no matter how good Heath Bell may be.

Lowry's junk; why would you want him? Move him to the AL East and he'd get lit up faster than an underage kid at a wedding reception.
