Swisher, Haren stop by to greet old friends

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Sat Mar 15, 2008 2:58 pm

First Nick Swisher greeted the A's when they arrived for a game against the White Sox at Tucson Electric Park, entertaining his old teammates as they prepared to stretch. Minutes later, after Swisher sprinted off, Dan Haren wandered over from the Diamondbacks clubhouse and leaned over the stands to say hi.

Swisher and Haren were the highest profile players traded by the A's this winter, and it was unexpected to see both men in the same place at almost the same time.

"It is weird, to be honest," Haren said. "I saw the guys getting off the bus and I didn't recognize most of them. ... I miss them. I do. A lot of my closest friends are over there."

Apart from the pinstripes, black shoes and short hair, Swisher appeared much the same (and he's growing his hair back). "Swishalicious" in his Oakland days, Swisher has now had "Dirty Thirty" T-shirts made up to represent his new number ("D-three-oh!" he announced to his A's pals), and at one point, he was riding a tiny electric scooter around the White Sox clubhouse.

"The only thing that's changed is his hair," A's outfielder Travis Buck said. "Otherwise, same old Swisher. Talking to him, he seems to enjoy it over there."

"It's been wonderful to see all these guys I played with, but it's different," Swisher said after visiting with Oakland's players. "I wish them all the best, I do, but this is the perfect spot for me. The (White Sox) guys have been amazing, they made the transition so smooth from top to bottom. I hope I can be that piece they need."
