Damn this sucks! Especially the fact that there's no timeable return.

Wow this hurts a lot...
I really hope JP gives him time to heal.

When it rains it pours. Hopefully he won't be out long.

As much as I don't want to throw my hopes out the window before opening day, hand injuries tend to sap a player's power for an extended period of time.
This is one of the worst pieces of news we could've received to begin the year.

The good: Not sure Rolen had a lot of power left to begin with after all those shoulder issues.
The bad: Its going to hurt just making contact for awhile. I have had a lot of nail problems in my life and they are lingering.

Yet another excuse for a crappy season.

Janssen, Rolen.

Then Wells, BJ, from last season.

I guess we'll have a $100 mil team, 4th in AL East with .500 record.

Trust me on this one.

Rolen is probably the most difficult player in the lineup to replace. There is no internal option at 3B with any type of upside, unlike the outfield (Lind, Snider), catcher (Diaz, Thigpen), and middle infield (Scutaro, Adams) situations. That's why I was hoping the Jays signed someone like Hinske who could at least replace some of Rolen's offensive potential should he go down. Scutaro is a good utility player, but I'm much more comfortable with him in the middle infield. He's not going to hit like a 3B.

The good news is it wasn't a shoulder issue again, but any hand/wrist/arm injury for a hitter is very difficult to recover from and play through. I'm sure Ricciardi won't help matters by rushing Rolen back to the lineup (and Rolen himself seems like the type who would play through pain).

If the Jays are going to be mediocre again, I'd much rather have it happen when everyone stays healthy. That way Ricciardi doesn't have an excuse that could convince Godfrey to keep him longer. Now with Ryan still hurting, Janssen out for the year, and Rolen having another injury, the excuses are already starting to pile up.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Third baseman Scott Rolen and closer B.J. Ryan will miss the start of the season because of injuries, leaving the Toronto Blue Jays without two key players.

Rolen and Ryan will stay behind in Florida when the Blue Jays break camp this week and head north. They open the season next Monday at Yankee Stadium.

Rolen had surgery on his broken finger Monday and will be out two weeks or more. Ryan, still recovering from elbow surgery, isn't expected back until at least mid-April.

Scutaro will fill in for Rolen... forgot we even had him.

I don't mind Scutaro; he's a real nifty bench player who can play a bunch of positions. That said, if he's our starting third baseman for long we're going to have problems.
As much as we need Rolen right away, I hope he doesn't get rushed back into action before he's ready. I don't mind waiting longer than expected if it means he's going to be healthy for the remainder of the season.
