In or Out: The Hall Of Fame Thread

Post#1 » by Da Schwab » Sun Mar 23, 2008 12:06 am

I'm beginning this thread due to Javy Lopez's retirement, which he announced today after the Braves sent him down to the minors along with 6 other players (per ESPN - http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3306932).

Javy struggled with the Orioles from '04 to mid-'06 and then was traded to the Sawx in '06 when Jason Varitek hit the DL. He played only 18 games for Boston that year, and hasn't seen the field since, even after he signed a minor league deal in Jan. '07 with the Rockies.

His best days were with the Atlanta Braves organization from 1992-2003. And, late last year, he signed a new deal with the Braves in an attempt to resurrect his career, or just try to be the steady backup for Brian McCann. His efforts were minimal, and he batted a dismal .188 during Spring ball, and has opted to hang up the cleats instead of spending a few months in A ball.

His Resume:

- A career .287 hitter
- Career .828 OPS
- 1,527 hits
- 260 HRs (Career season high 43 in '03, in which he played only 129 games)
- 864 RBI
- 3-time All-Star, '03 Silver Slugger and NL Comeback Player of the Year

Is Javy a HOFer?

IMHO, no he isn't, although he will be remembered as one of the '90s best catchers (well, to me at least), but he will always be behind guys like Piazza, Pudge and Posada.

Is Terry Steinbach a Hall of Famer?

Out. Not really even close. He has a career .277 EqA and wasn't a very good defensive catcher.

A really great player for a few years, and a really good career, but not a Hall of Famer. I'd rate him as the fourth best catcher in the nineties behind Piazza, I-Rod and Tettleton, but I'm probably missing a few guys.

Posada didn't really take off until 1998.

No way.

Not a HOF'er.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

No, he was a pretty solid player his entire career. Not a Hall of Fame player.

No way on Javy. He played great for a years on a great team but his stats just don't point to his enshrinement.

Moose has got 250 career wins and should be able to pitch at two more years so I would say he gets to at least 265 wins. He's got a sub 4 ERA, so as of now I would still say no. I think the way he gets in is if the Yankees win the WS and he at least plays some role in that other than being just one of the 25 guys on the squad.

Raffy Palmeiro? No chance.

My candidate is: Gary Sheffield

Real quality response.

Well here are Gary's stats:

Batting average .296
Home runs 480
Runs batted in 1,576
Hits 2,521

He's going to hit 500 HRs, and 27th in all time HRs. He also has WS Ring (97 WS)

I really think that Sheff's attitude throughout his career may hold him back from getting in. If you took that out of the equation, then its still only a maybe, IMO.

His stats are very solid, but his career during the Steroid Era make all of his numbers very shady. If Bonds or McGwire don't get in, I don't see how Sheff could.

He has a ring, and he was a great defensive player for years. And you can take out his attitude, because personal traits haven't mattered in the past.

Sheffield is a logical choice for induction, which means he has a snowball

Mr wonderful I was responding to Javy Lopez. If Lopez had Sheff's stats I would have said yes.

I would say he has a great chance if not a shoe-in.
