Would Jays fans have wanted Barry Bonds here?
I'm listening to Godfrey today, saying they thought about it for 5min. But their answer is "no".
I understand we already have a DH. Frank Thomas can't do much else. But money aside, I think Thomas is done, while I think Bonds could have been awesome at the Dome.
And I don't care about the circus. We go into every year knowing we won't win the division. For that reason alone, we should be willing to try anything.
What is the consensus here?

I'm not so sure about that but I agree about the media distractions. I thought that TB was a good fit for him, but he may not be the best role model for all these young guys over there.
Anyway, there's no need to have a player like Bonds with Thomas on this team.
I voted yes but I did not take in consideration the team's situation, just the fact that I would've liked to see him in a Jays uni.

Even his wins wouldn't push us far enough? Sounds like everyone knows the season's over.

We're quite a distance away from the playoffs, barring disaster for the Yanks or Sox. Last year, Bonds had a 'win score' of +5 over Frank Thomas...that's hardly enough to cover the distance, IMO.

**** your asterisk.

Who was hitting in front and after him in the lineup last year? Randy Winn and Bengie Molina? Ray Durham?
If you surround Bonds with some good hitters, there's no way he's not more valuable than Frank Thomas.

What does win score mean for baseball?
Batting Wins, from baseball reference, says he was worth 2.3 wins over Frank Thomas last year, which is not nearly enough to make the post season.

I was using the numbers from The Hardball Times; not sure what differentiates the two.
Still, we're both arguing the same point...whether it's 2.3 or 5 wins, the difference between Bonds and Thomas isn't enough to make us a playoff squad, and thus would not be worth bringing the circus to town.

He would help this team out quiet a bit but I don't think he would make us into a playoff team, so I really don't think it would be worth all the distractions that he brings to the field.

I wouldn't be against it as an emergency signing if Frank has injury problems or struggles out of the gate. He might be more trouble than he's worth as all of the world media would be in the locker room everyday talking to him about steroids. He is a pretty negative presence. But he can hit, it a pinch I would tak him as a DH replacement if needed.

+1. Put Rios, wells or thomas around Bonds' bat and that's dangerous trio. One of the things this team needed last year was a power hitting left-handed bat.
The baggage that everyone says he'll come with is overrated.
The players don't have to love one another, they just have to respect each other, especially in baseball. And the teams chemistry couldn't be any worse than the Hillenbrand and Lilly fiasco in '06.
Besides, Bonds' trial isn't going to resume until November or something like that, and with Canseco's book out, the attention should fade from him and focus more on Clemons and Rodriguez this year.
