From Lou's mouth.
Soriano back to leadoff & Theriot moves to the 2 hole.
Move Theriot to the bench, imo. Guy sucks. Me and GYBE have been saying it for a while.. I'm ready to see Cedeno everyday.

What in God's name is the point of this? Both Soriano and Theriot are terrible choices to have at the top of the order, switching them around accomplishes nothing. Instead of doing this pointless little switch, why not implement some actual change?
Put Fukudome up top to show these tools how to approach an at-bat. The contrast between how Fukudome and Soriano work a pitcher is startling, especially when you consider it's Fukudome's first series ever.

I agree, but if it really does make that much of a difference for Soriano to lead off(mentally) then I rather have Soriano bat lead off and deal with his high K mark.
The problem is Pie and Theriot both have to bat 8th, but only one of them can. If Soriano is leading off then Theriot needs to be batting 8th.
I personally want:
Soriano
Fukudome
Lee
Ramierez
DeRosa
Soto
Pie
Theriot

Apparently Soriano is doing bad becuase he is not "comfortable" at the two spot. So Lou is starting to play musical chairs with the lineup to hopefully get his bat going.
And I have also been calling for Theriot's head.
My lineup would be either...
Soriano
Fukudome
Lee
Ramierez
DeRosa
Soto
Pie
Cedeno
...or some combination with Fukudome leading off.

I get that, but here's my point. We cannot watch Soriano leadoff for the next 6 years. A precedent needs to be set or we'll be stuck with his inefficient play destroying our offense.
He's making $17 million. If he can't bat anywhere but leadoff (where he's a liability), I'd rather not play him out of spite. The organization needs to show that they understand how to score runs, moving Fukudome up at least points out the proper way for a 1-2 hitter to approach an AB.
What a terrible, terrible signing this will be. We couldn't come up with money for Beltran, but they were happy to give one of the worst contracts in baseball to Alfonso. For the next six years, he'll be one of the highest paid players. And for that money, you get a low OBP along with declining power and speed. Oh, and he can only bat leadoff. And if the contract looks bad now...I mean, imagine how it looks 5 years from now.

I don't know how this would look but if you put Soriano in the 4 hole he could see better pitches with Ramirez protecting him if he hits fifth. Still that spot is technically an RBI spot, where Ramirez fits well.
Despite Soriano's low OBP, he is a power hitter with some speed. The main phrase there being power hitter. The Cubs need to learn that and place him in the order accordingly.
