Watch this stat closely over the season

Post#1 » by nykgeneralmanager » Fri Apr 4, 2008 7:58 am

1 run games...you know, the games that are usually won because of good bullpen management and in game management (such as bunting like tonight twice in a row)

2007: 18-21 (started 2-9)

2008 so far: 2-0

The difference a manager can make...

Nice cherrypicking. How about taking the W-L record of one run games from 1996-2006 also?

I can't say Girardi had very difficult choices to make in the two outings. Two good performances from the starters, with two very good relievers coming in at the end of each game. And a lot of people weren't happy on the one full decision he did make--pulling Hughes out after 6 for Traber and Bruney.

And as much as I harp on Torre's inability to manage games, I don't think it has a drastic impact on a season. A bad decision by a manager probably doesn't end up costing a win more than a few times a year. Keeping the bullpen fresh is a concern too, but we've yet to see proof Girardi is doing any better on that end.

One run games mainly come down to the bullpen and starter durability, and luck. And two games isn't enough to assume anything's changed on the former. Remember, Joba probably won't be there all season.

You believe that Torre would have bunted with Johnny Damon and Jeter last night? I don't. Maybe with Jeter, but certainly not with Damon.

Well the point is that this is essentially the same team as last season, for the most part. Torre had much more to work with in his early years and couldn't have made a mistake with the bullpen management even if he tried really hard. Like I said, the point is to see how each of them handle the same exact team.

But since you're interested...
2006 - 24-22
2005 - 27-16
2004 - 24-16

I don't think people had as many issues with Torre 3 years ago as they did last year with his in game management, and I think you'd agree with that.

Torre was never a prolific bunter, but I never noticed him being hesitant to bunt in close-and-late game situations (which is the only place you should be bunting in the AL, really)... although usually it was bad offensive players doing it. And honestly, I'm not sure I would have bunted Jeter. Was advancing the runners one base worth the out given who was coming up to bat? I guess you could say it killed the chance of a GIDP and that helped.

I never forgave torre for that. If schilling wanted to come out there with that fake bloody sox, I was going to test him.. He would have seen three straight bunts to the third base side...
