Why for Miami:

Obviously the Heat's season is a complete disaster. The team has been poorly put together by Riley and there is no improvement in sight. They were an elite team the last few years because Wade is simply Wade and Shaq still drew enough attention in the post, opening the game up for their outside shooters. Unfortunately, Shaq is no longer enough of a force to warrant consistent double teams, and even when he does get doubled the team no longer has guys like Posey and Kapono to knock down open threes. They simply don't have enough talent on the team to account for Shaq's decline, which is why they make the major move to bring in McGrady. His arrival makes them an immediate threat, with teams no longer able to stack the defense against Wade. Considering their friendship and hopes of playing together, his arrival might even light a little fire under Shaq. The Heat have to take Alston and his salary off of Houston's hands to balance things out. Alston could actually be useful though, since Miami would be thin at PG following the trade. He did have a positive year with the Heat before Shaquille arrived. Although Miami is taking back a lot of salary in this deal, both McGrady's and Shaq's huge contracts expire the same year, creating future cap room to surround Wade with talent after the Wade/Tmac/Shaq experiment is over.

Why for Houston:

They have not and are not going anywhere with Tmac. We all know how important financial flexibility is in this league, and Houston get a ton of it with the departure of Tmac and Alston. The only salary they are taking back in this deal is Maggette's and he only has one more season after this. Maggette helps to offset the scoring pop that they lose with Tmac, but he would probably not figure into their plans for the long term. He would be a great trade piece next year, since he will have an expiring contract. Frankly, no Heat fans truly know how good Dorell Wright can be, since Riley has done nothing but jerk the kid around for the past four seasons. He is extremely long and athletic, is already a good rebounder, and seems to be improving his perimeter offensive game. I don't think he will ever develop into a Tmac type player, but I think he does have the ability to be an 18/8 type guy in the right system. Houston take J-Will simply as an expiring deal, and more than likely Miami would give the Rockets the money necessary to buy out and release Parker. In order to entice Houston, a draft pick might have to be thrown in by Miami as well. This deal allows Houston to become a player in free agency and trades for the next two seasons, allowing them to build around Yao.

Why for LA:

Nothing more than a salary move. Davis brings the same scoring ability as Maggette, but with an deal that expires this year.

Maggette has one more year on his deal after this one. This is the last year of Davis' contract.

No, Maggette has an ETO. It is very widely believed that he's extremely anxious to exercise it.

Houston says no. We don't get picks to rebuild, nor do we get worthwhile pieces to make a run for a championship. This is definitely a 50 cents on the dollar kind of trade, especially since Maggette, the main worthwhile piece, will leave at the end of the season.
