If an offer doesn't come along for Seattle that doesn't better their team, I can see the Sonics buying Thomas out.
But Kwame and a 1st for Thomas.
Or the Sonics could swap their high 2nd round pick for a late first. But more second round picks doesn't do anything for the Sonics.
Plus you have to keep princess er... I mean Kobe happy.

could send Pietrus for another player possibly to finalize the deal
We could send you our own 2nd rounder in return, so you'd trade down about 10 spots. Might not be all that bad, cause that 2nd rounder isn't guaranteed money and you guys have been pretty successfull in the 2nd round in the past.
BTW: Pietrus is playing at our deepest position and would loose his bird rights(so we at least would be able to match contract offers and could sign and trade him), if he accepted to get traded to us. That would pretty much make him a half year rental and not a guy we'd go after in such a trade.

Like it's been said before, we'll just hang onto Thomas, if there isn't a deal that we really like and we'd then decide if we keep him for the whole season or buy him out, so he can sign with a contending team.

There's another consideration here. That's R Swift. At some point the Sonics have to figure out if he can regain his pre-injury form or not. The trade deadline seems about the right time to begin playing R Swift so that can be determined. The Sonics did not pick up the fifth year of his rookie deal so a decision essentially needs to be made before the season is over.
I agree with all that it's not a 1st round pick (+ expirings), but rather a swap of a 1st for the Sonics 2nd pick. In effect the Sonics want to trade up 8-10 spots or so. An alternative to the pick swap is a decent prospect (J Crittenton would be perfect, as would CJ Miles).
I also agree the right thing for the Sonics to do would be to release K Thomas if they couldn't get an acceptable deal. It frees up minutes for R Swift. Plus, this possibility would raise the stakes & increase the chances some team would meet the Sonics asking price.
From what I can tell there's a lot of contenders that could use K Thomas and meet the expiring, pick or prospect requirement - Lakers, Nets, Magic, Warriors & Pistons. There's also contenders who can't meet the requirement (Utah, Boston, Chicago) who would sign him in a heartbeat if the Sonics did the classy act of releasing him.

You can not pick up a 5th year on a rookie deal, cause they only run for 4 years.
That 5th year would be the QO and can only be signed the summer after a players 4th season in the league.
The Sonics just didn't wanted to commit to him long term(just like with West), because the new management hadn't seen enough of him and wanted to wait till this offseason, to see if he's worth keeping or not.

I bet they would. But there's no where near enough incentive for Seattle.
J William's only value to Seattle is as an expiring. K Thomas is also an expiring, but he's also a veteran big who can really play. Plus he's a great locker room guy for the young Sonics.
While it's true E Watson has a somewhat overly priced three year deal, he at least is a decent PG who plays defense. S Parker has a lower cost two year deal but he can't play the game to save his life.
Maybe if S Parker was an expiring the Sonics would conisder it. Or if D Cook was added to the deal. (This is where the Miami guys yell "NO!" in perfect harmony.)

Quite apart from "what's the price for KT" is the question of "what's the worth to the Pistons"? If past performance is any indicator, the answer is "not much" (unfortunately).
The Pistons have had great enforcers for the past THREE YEARS with DColeman and Dale Davis, and they didn't get play. Dale Davis and Jason Maxiell in particular made a formidable pairing LAST YEAR, then we never saw that when it mattered.
You can bring a horse to water...

Though I agree that Davis should have played more, Coleman was totally washed up by the time he got here. IIRC, he didn't even last the whole season...?

DColeman was waived as part of Dumars thinking the salary cap was going down in 2005, and then we ended up down another C a couple weeks later where we could've used him.
Coleman had a couple games early on where he did some nice "veteran enforcer" hits, but was barely played even when we could've used him. 15 rebounds in 50 minutes didn't suggest someone who totally lacked game.
Dale Davis was criminally underused, especially when Ben Wallace was being all emo boy and Rasheed was gimping and being abused. <sigh>

You just described MJ...
you call MJ selfish? does Wilkins have the abilities to make teammates better and carry the team like MJ did?
MJ took a lot of shots himself, but he was the go-to guy and star of the team, but Wilkins is NOT. Not even close.
I don't even know why I have wasted the time to say that
