Let me preface this whole thing by saying that I am in no way, shape or form reporting that discussions of this deal are taking place between the Mavs and the Heat. The following proposal is sports talk radio blabbing from the big mouth of Skin, a rising star at The Ticket (who only has me on the air when I write nice things about him).
Having said that, the Heat and Mavs absolutely should be talking about a trade that would bring Shaq to Dallas and give Miami a head start on a major rebuilding project.
Follow the jump for details.
Here's the proposal: Keith Van Horn and Gana Diop for Shaq.
We've mentioned that the Mavs still have Van Horn's rights, which is a major bargaining chip in the trade market. Why? Because the Mavs can sign him to a big deal that won't be guaranteed after this season, making the salaries work in a trade and giving the other team an expiring contract/salary cap flexibility.
Why would Miami pull the trigger on this trade? Because the Heat is absolutely horrible, and Pat Riley has a salary-cap mess on his hands with Shaq on the books for $20 million for two more seasons. All of a sudden, the Heat would be able to max out a free agent star (Elton Brand?) to put next to Dwyane Wade and whichever stud they take in the lottery.
Shaq is no longer the most dominant force in the NBA, and he never will be again. He's gone from one of the greatest ever to one of the top five active big men.
But Shaq could be the piece that separates the Mavs from the rest of the West contenders this season. It's well worth trying to find out if you don't have to give up anybody in your rotation, which Diop has fallen out of lately.
Why wouldn't the Mavs do this? Well, Mark Cuban might not be too keen on the idea of paying an aging Shaq $40 million (and matching that in luxury tax) over the next two seasons.
Well, let me point out that Michael Finley ($18.6 million) and Shawn Bradley ($5.2 million) are off the books after this season. Plus, imagine how much money Cuban and Shaq could make when they combine their marketing genius.
