New Orleans / Washington (edited)

Post#1 » by Chocolate City Jordanaire » Mon Jan 7, 2008 6:32 am

(Original deal had Antonio Daniels and Bobby Jackson included. Both have been removed after Hermes' suggestion below.)

New Orleans sends
SF Rasual Butler
PF/C Hilton Armstrong

New Orleans receives
PF Darius Songaila
SF Dominic McGuire

Songaila is able to backup PF or C and is a solid passer and shooter. New Orleans has many scorers, DS gives them a needed facilitator other than Paul.

Washington sends
PF Darius Songaila
SF Dominic McGuire

Washington receives
SF Rasual Butler
PF/C Hilton Armstrong

The Wizards do this to get up from under the tax. Rasual has played with Caron before and would be a much needed bench scorer. Armstrong would have to compete with Blatche and Pecherov but might prove useful.

Thoughts?

I think that's really poor for the Wizards. AD has been a valuable asset this season on and off the court, and going from him to Jackson or Wilks is a huge downgrade. AD is not a guy I trade right now, and especially not for this package.

I'm a fan of Armstrong, but he has done nothing to prove he is ready for the NBA.

If you can figure out how to move Song so that we gain space, then I'm more willing to do that.

I wouldn't do this for the simple fact that AD means more to this team than Bobby Jackson would.

Can we take Daniels and Jackson out and just do Song/McGuire for Armstrong/Butler?

My reasons for suggesting this are that while AD certainly helps the Wizards win games now he's not a difference maker against the better teams. Nor is Songaila. This deal kills a year off of both their deals and if frees up several hundred thousand this season.

I believe Rasual and Bobby Jackson are veterans who can bring it off the bench. I think the Wizards can get by with Mason and Stevenson with Wilks off the bench well enough to stay near .500 and make the playoffs.

This gives the Wizards no luxury tax worries in 2009, and if Gil comes back in February it trades Daniels at the height of his value before he'd return to relative obscurity off the bench.

yungal, there's no deal for Songaila or Thomas that doesn't involve giving another team enough value to make it worth the other team's while.

This is not poor for the Wizards talent-wise. Armstrong's a #11 pick who's been very good in limited time. Jackson can score a ton and he played in a very similar offense in Sacramento. Rasual and Caron came in as rookies together in Miami.

My point is this gives the Wizards cap room and the ability to adjust their roster for if they make the playoffs.

Not to mention, having all the young bigs makes it pretty easy to trade with the Grizzlies for somebody like Lowry. I'd rather have him than Antonio despite how well AD runs the show.

Defense wins games and that's what the Wizards need at PG.

Wizards are contending this year for a playoff spot without GA and they will need Daniels to do it. Bobby Jackson has lost a little of that jump shot, some nights it just looks awful.

I don't like it for the Wizards either. The problem is that the ultimate prize in this deal, Hilton Armstrong, is redundant. He's basically another Andray Blatche, only older and less productive. I don't see the why the Wizards should downgrade at PG just to acquire him.

The cap savings in 2009/10 are nice but not THAT important. The Wizards might be able to avoid the luxtax that year without doing anything (depending on how much the luxtax cap rises). And if they're in a pinch, they can probably just trade the last year of Etan's contract if they add $3M and a first rounder. There is no reason to do something this drastic just to save a little future cap space.
