Just going by how they are playing in 2007/2008. Forget about what they have done in the past and just focus on who is playing the best basketball this year. There may be players with better reputations or accompolished more in years past,but just go by who is playing the best basketball this season.
My top 5 players who are currently playing the best in 2007/2008 are
1. Chris Paul - The Hornets are 23-11 and on pace for a 55 win season. The 3rd year guard is having a season very similair to Nash a couple of years ago. He's averaging 21.6 points, 10 assist and shooting 48% from the field.
2. KG - The Celtics are currently 29-3. KG is averaging 19 points, 10 boards and shooting 55% from the field. What he has impacted most for that team is on the defensive end. Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are ot known as great defenders,but there still 1# in defense. Mainly due to what KG's brings on that side of the ball.
3. Dwight Howard -22 points, 15 rebounds and shooting 60% from the field. That's ridiculous. His team is currently 22-13 with the 3rd best record in the East.
4. Lebron James - Averaging 29 points, 7 boards, 7 assist and shooting 48% from the field. His team is only 17-17, but he was injured for a multiple game stretch early in the season.
5. Allen Iverson - 26.9 points, 7 assist and shooting 46.5 % from the field. His team is 21-12 and leading there division.
Hororable mention - Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, Brandon Roy

I did not notice that Allen Iverson is having his best year in terms of FG in FT%'s, as well as his third best career 3pt%.
He has had 6 seasons with better scoring averages (out of 12), but only two seasons with fewer attempts. His efficiency is outstanding this season.
Also, his assist numbers rank better than seven other seasons, his turnovers are below average by his standards, his steals are on par with his career averages, and he is fouling at a lower rate.
Dare I label him the best shooting guard in the league this season? >Kobe? The rebounding discrepancy can be explained by a) being 6 inches shorter (and that's generous) and b) having Marcus Camby grab 14.2, Carmelo 6.7, Nene 6.2, Kenyon Martin 6.0, Eduardo Najera 4.7, and Linas Kleiza 3.9 rebounds per game. Makes things kinda difficult, wouldn't you think? and his team only has one more loss than Kobe's.
I'd say Chris Paul, Allen Iverson, Lebron James (his numbers are better than Caron Butler's and his team is only one game behind), Kevin Garnett (rebounds, assists, points, and blocks are down from career averages, but so are minutes played), and Dwight Howard are having the best seasons, league-wide, by their official starting positions.
I'd put Baron Davis or Steve Nash/Kobe Bryant/Caron Butler/Dirk Nowitzki/Amare Stoudemire as the All-NBA second team, and Steve Nash or Baron Davis/Brandon Roy/Paul Piece/Carlos Boozer or Tim Duncan/Yao Ming on the third team.
