It's mainly in the Rose Bowl where we get smoked, b/c the Pac 10 always has home field advantage. Tonight it's LSU that's playing a home game. Completely unfair. But, truth be told, the way that LSU's playing it probably wouldn't matter if it were on a neutral field.

Come on, that's silly. Ohio State was a clear #1. Sure, other teams might have wanted to get into the action and I for one have been advocating a playoff system for years. But it's LSU that had to fight off the other contenders, not OSU.

If you're just saying that others should have gotten a shot to proclaim themselves the champs, I'm completely with you. The BCS system is a joke. We should have a 4 or 8 team playoff. Amazingly, the conference commissioners seem to be open to the possibility of a "Final Four."

What's wrong with a 8-team playoff using the teams that finish the year ranked 1-8 in the BCS poll? Play the first round in early December (before finals, since the players' studies supposedly one of the reasons people give for not wanting a playoff). Then play the final 2 rounds in the 2 weeks after Christmas. It would mean a 2-week gap between the first round and secon round, and it would take a little manuevering not to conflict with the NFL postseason, but it can be done.

As to your "yes and no" point, it seems to me that you just mean "yes." IF Missou and WVU had just won their final games-- but they didn't. Given that they didn't, OSU was a clear #1.

But aside from that quibbling, you and I agree wholeheartedly on the need for a playoff system. I've written this many times before, but back in the early 80s Sport magazine, to which I subscribed, had an awesome article proposing a playoff system that would incorporate the existing bowl games. Keep in mind, this was before the days of the "Poulan Weed Eater Bowl" (a real game for a few years) and the other bowls named simply for a corporation. The writer proposed that the lesser bowls would be the early rounds of the playoffs; the now-defunct Peach Bowl, now-defunct Cherry Bowl, etc. Then the more respectable bowls would be the next rounds, and so on and so on. The Final 4 would be something like the Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta or Cotton (back then the Cotton Bowl actually meant something).

I realize that that will never happen. It's just a pipe dream, but a beautiful pipe dream at that. Nonetheless, an 8 game playoff would be not only do-able but wildly popular among college FB fans. It'd be a win-win scenario. Athletes wouldn't have to be out of school for any longer than they are now. Just scrap the extra game that a lot of teams play (it used to be only 11 games for everyone) and a few of the many weeks of preparation.

I simply LOVE March Madness for college BB. A playoff for college FB, especially if it could be big enough to incorporate the occasional Boise State or Hawaii, would be simply fabulous.

To be honest, I'm tired of the championship game being played 4 weeks after the regular season. College football is a disgrace with the way they handle its national championship. All conferences MUST have a championship game or none of them should. And there MUST be a playoff system before long.

Its getting way too out of control. The way the system is set now, there is zero benefit in a team playing any sort of non conference team that could be threatening. Its just stupid.

Baseball and College Football are really starting to lose me with the way they are run.

The fact that there is no playoff in college football is one of the most mind boggling things ever.

1) It would make the regular season more meaningful. The current system your season often ends after a single loss. This makes so few games meaningful, because so many teams are eliminated early.

2) It would add continuity to college football because you wouldn't have this crazy month and a half off for no reason.

3) It's entirely doable. How do I know? Oh yeah, Division II already does it.

4) The playoff system would probably make 10x as much money as the bowl system, but you could integrate them so easily anyway. Just make each playoff game a different bowl. You'd then have those bowls be in huge major games. The end result is that if you go to a 16 team playoff system you have 15 must watch games instead of 1 must watch game. If you need to keep 30 some odd bowls then run an NIT tournament.

I know no one here (at least not yet) is arguing against a playoff.

It's just mind boggling to me that it hasn't happened. I mean it would make a ton more money, it would be far more fair, and it would be fair more interesting. I just don't get it.

Yes yes yes. And by the way, the conference playoff is a joke too. Big 12 North and South, SEC East and West: please. It's absurd. (The Big 10 has 11 schools and IT doesn't need a friggin' playoff. Neither does the Pac 10.) That adds a week onto the season, yet have we heard any complaints from the hypocritical college officials who've said that a national playoff would add too much time onto the season? Of course not. Eliminate those silly playoffs and you gain a week, PLUS as Doug has mentioned the national playoff system would make a TON of revenue that should more than compensate for the lost revenue of a conference playoff (which would be basically meaningless were it not for the BCS system).

The Big ten sucks bigtime. They don't play anyone and they don't play a conference title game unlike the supreme conferences do. OSU is not even a top 3 team. This conference wins 1 title every 10 years and people think OSU deserves a shot after playing crap teams..LOL

Ohio State has no chance in this game, and they didnt deserve to be there IMO. The Big Ten is nothing more then 2 decent teams at best, that beat up on horrible teams all year.

I hate USC, but USC vs LSU would have been a better match up. Just like a rematch of IL vs Ohio State would have been a better bowl game. but wasnt possible.

I cant wait for a playoff in college football, this is so stupid the way it is set up. A computer picks who gets a chance to be crowned champion.

i like the pattern on BIG 10 vs SEC for the BCS title now 2 years in a row. these are the conferences that consistently produce the most NFL players.

a playoff is the best solution because the conference rivalries are really the best part of college football. if they had a playoff scenario i bet more often than not it would result in a Big 10 vs SEC or SEC vs SEC BCS title game.

but more than the BCS series i look forward to games during the year such as
OSU vs MI
OSU vs WIS
MI vs MSU
Florida vs Georgia
Auburn vs Alabama
LSU vs Florida

not a glut of crappy Bowl games sandwiched into 2 weeks at the end of the year.
