Officially garbage. All that quote is is Sam Smith's response in his latest mailbag column, which I just posted.

I edited the title so nobody blows this out of proportion.

It works (trade ID 4394889)
IF they like Chapu, they must consider him an upgrade to Miller (I do).
Would they do it? Probably not... It basically comes down to their attitude on Gasol, how he fits into their long term plans.
That's a dreadful deal for Memphis.
Cliff Levingston is firmly on the "Gasol isn't THAT good" bandwagon but there's no doubt that he's worth a couple of our good players. Nocioni + Thomas + filler is probably a fair deal considering the circumstances (teams don't get back fair value for all-stars).

i think memphis considers nocioni at a different position than miller
miller is our starting SG....the thought in memphis over the summer was Iavaroni wanted Noc to play PF....
this season Iavaroni is in love with playing Gay at the PF.....b/c Iavaroni comes from phoenix and likes the smaller lineup, with what he calls the "phoenix-4".....with noc, either him or gay would play PF, the other play SF....

Here's a simple deal that Cliff Levingston thinks would work well for both teams.
Bulls trade:
- Andres Nocioni
- Tyrus Thomas or Joakim Noah (Memphis' choice)
- Joe Smith
- 2008 1st round pick (top 3 protected)
Grizzlies trade:
- Pau Gasol
- Juan Carlos Navarro
The Grizzlies pick up a couple guys that would fit well into their system: Nocioni and Thomas/Noah. They seem to really like Nocioni as evidenced by the reported free agent interest this past offseason. Either Tyrus or Noah would bring a lot of defense, rebounding and shot blocking to their team from the PF/C position and both can run the floor in Iavaroni's system. Joe Smith is used as a nice filler who can still play and probably give them 20 minutes of good basketball per game when called upon.
1. Stoudamire, Conley, Lowry
2. Miller, Jacobsen
3. Gay, Nocioni, Cardinal
4. Thomas, Swift, Warrick
5. Milicic, Smith, Brown
We pick up Gasol as a fair price, and as a result, balance the roster a bit. ICLO; we put Navarro in the starting lineup alongside Hinrich as a guy who can shoot the jumper off screen and spread the floor for Gasol down low, then continue to bring Gordon off the bench early and often. Hopefully Navarro will make Duhon's PT decrease. Gasol obviously steps in as our low post offense whom we run the offense through early with Deng probably playing well off of. Sefolosha steps in as the primary backup 3 and Noah/Thomas and Gray (whoever is left) get plenty of time in a backup capacity.
1. Hinrich, Duhon, Curry
2. Navarro, Gordon, Griffin
3. Deng, Sefolosha, Nichols
4. Gasol, Thomas/Noah, Khryapa
5. Wallace, Gray

If they're really that gung ho for Nocioni, that's a fine trade. It definitely shores up the Memphis frontline for years to come. The only question I have is whether Memphis is willing to deal Gasol without also getting rid of either Miller's or Cardinal's contract.

Man, you guys should just fire Iavaroni on the spot if he'd pull that crap.
I want so badly to dump Noc for Gasol, but I really cannot fathom any reason whatsoever as to why Memphis would want him. And now that Sam Smith has proposed it I'm just gonna assume that it doesn't have a shred of truth to it.
