I miss enforcers (damn you David Stern)

Post#1 » by Hunter » Tue Jan 8, 2008 1:43 pm

So I was sitting around last night thinking about the Pistons needs and top of my list was backup C w/ some grit. A rugged, physical defender that will knock somebody on their ass and then stand over them and talk some ****.

Then I started to go down the list of potential candidates and the list was pathetically short. And it made me sad. Where have all the enforcers gone? I want Ricky Mahorn back. And Charles Oakley. And Dale Davis. Hell, even your superstars (Bird, Jordan, Malone etc) would make you think twice.

Damn you David Stern! The league is so pathetically soft right now it sickens me at times. You used to have to earn your baskets. It was both a battle of wills and endurance. It was war. Now? ugh...

I want more guys like Matt Harpring. And Andres Nocioni (admit it - if he were on your team you'd love the guy instead of hating him).

I miss my enforcers.

I understand why Stern has done it. He's wanted to clean up the leagues image and casual fans want to see scoring.

I'm not even asking we return to the more brutal period where guys would take elbows to the head and require stitches. But this flagrant crap for what should just be a good clean hard foul is complete b.s. This idea that you can't even touch somebody with the ball on the perimeter is a joke.

Part of the problem is that attention to defense has increased at the same time offensively fundamentals have declined. You could also argue the league is more watered down, although I think globalization largely counters that effect. But for whatever reason Stern has been forced to artificially inflate offensive production in order to make the product more attractive to the consumer. To me it just cheapens the league.

The defensive 3 second violation rule is the reason you don't see the quote unquote "enforcers" these days.

yup I really miss them too. it's not that I'm really a fan of them but I'd rather have them than I'd want pussies playing. the league is getting softer and softer and floping is a big part of that. the player who do that shouldn't be rewarded for acting.

Increasing scoreing with free throws, does not make the game exciting. Damn touch fouls!

Some more enforcer-type players would be nice. And the better judgement on harder foul calls.

Joakim Noah has potential to be the kind of player you are talking about. So does Tyrus Thomas.

For two decades the Jazz were known as one of the toughest teams in the NBA with guys like Karl Malone, Mark Eaton, John Stockton, etc. and hard-nosed coach Jerry Sloan racking up technicals wherever he went. Sloan has become quiet as a pussycat and his team has become soft like charmin.

The fact that Tyrus Thomas, Noah, and Nocioni are mentioned as possible enforcers highlights how soft it has gotten.
