Why For the Bulls?
Things simply aren't working for Chicago, so it's time for a change. Maggette gives the Bulls a guy who can consistently attack the hoop and get to the line. He's a big G/F and would effectively end the Bulls small-backcourt. Cassell would give the Bulls a true leader. He'd also be a great distributor and a guy who can help Gordon in the clutch. Hassell gives the Bulls a defensive stopper. Dampier has a longer contract than Wallace, however, he will not get entitlement minutes so Noah, Gray, and Thomas will benefit. Wallace has $44 mill remaining on his contract, while Dampier has about $41 mill, so ultimately the Bulls save there. The extra first round pick gives the Bulls some added flexibility.
Why for the Mavs?
Dampier and Hassell simply aren't big parts of their team. Cuban will pay to win, and you've got to believe that he'd feel more comfortable going against Duncan and KG in the playoffs with Wallace on his side. It's a no brainer for the Mavs.
Why for the Clippers?
Cassell is on the brink of demanding a trade, Maggette is likely to try and leave LA as a free-agent, and the Clippers are struggling at the bottom of the West. It's time to rebuild. Hinrich instantly makes them younger while improving their defense considerably. Sefolosha gives them another young guard who brings defense and versatility. Hinrich, Sefolosha, and Livingston could compliment each other fairly well.

Avery Johnson is smoking crack.

Sam Cassell is not playing very well this season and is obviously at the end of his career. He can't stay healthy anymore and it's been four years since he averaged more than 7 APG (his career APG is 6.1 -- LOWER than Hinrich's). Cassell is an excellent leader (if a little yappy) and has a history of being good in the clutch, but at this point of his career he really should be a backup PG playing no more than 20 MPG. And neither he nor Maggette are good defenders, which would make the Bulls' perimeter defense way worse than it has been already (now that's a frightening thought). Maggette is excellent at attacking the basket and getting to the FT line to be sure, but what else does he do? He's a poor ballhandler and a below average perimeter shooter. I'm not even sure he can play the 2-guard position. He plays almost entirely at SF for the Clippers. I live in L.A., and I can tell you that Maggette complains too much for my liking -- he complained when he was benched, he complains when he doesn't touch the ball a lot and he complains about his contract. Despite all this, Donald Sterling seems to really like him and is not at all eager to get rid of him.
And I agree with the poster who thinks the Mavs would rather have Dampier than Wallace. Dampier is leading the NBA in FG% (well, he would be if he qualified for the title) and -- if you compare their numbers -- is averaging more rebounds and blocks per minute than is Wallace.
