Health better, but Deng still iffy
Forward likely out till Sunday; Nocioni, Hinrich should play

By K.C. Johnson
Tribune staff reporter

January 10, 2008, 10:32 PM CST
With a critical four-game trip starting Friday in Philadelphia, the Bulls received good news on the injury and illness front Thursday.

Andres Nocioni and Kirk Hinrich practiced and are expected to play despite still feeling the effects of the flu.

Luol Deng, who has missed two games with left Achilles' tendinitis, participated in about half the workout and said he would test his injury at Friday's morning shootaround.

That said, Deng acknowledged he still has soreness and that athletic trainer Fred Tedeschi is leaning toward holding him out until Sunday's matinee in Atlanta.

"Just pushing off a little bit bothered me," Deng said. "I played live, kind of got in a rhythm a little bit, forgot about it. It's when you stop for a little while that you feel it.

"We think this [injury] is coming from my back. It has been a tough year for injuries. I never like missing games. But you have to deal with it and try to use this time to come back better."

Exactly. Miller is a solid player but he shouldn't be abusing a defender of Hinrich's quality.

If Deng indeed does not play (Cliff Levingston hopes he doesn't) then hopefully Thabo will see some more time at small forward.

If Deng is out, Boylan has to rely on the depth of our bench to keep the game close, let alone eek out a victory. I'm talking Joakim, Tyrus, Aaron, Thabo, and hell, even Demetris. You need to match Philadelphia's energy with energy, and a little bit of hustle plus athleticism.

Man beware everyone, if you though Kirk was pale to begin with tonight he will be ghostly white.

Dengs value is going down faster than Eddy Curry drinking a milkshake.

Deng's prognosis for return worsens

By K.C. Johnson
Tribune staff reporter

January 11, 2008, 10:00 PM CST

PHILADELPHIA -- Luol Deng's Thursday optimism faded to Friday pessimism as early as the morning shootaround, which he missed as stiffness and soreness returned to his left Achilles' tendon.

"I'm tired of this," Deng said before Friday's game as he used an electronic device to treat his tendinitis.

What appeared a certainty after Deng practiced Thursday

opposite

Deng doesnt want to be injured so he'll take off as much time as he can get away with.

it isnt about the team anymore - it's about Mr Deng & his earning potential

Is an achilles "strain" is hard to pin down? If so, he can keep saying that he is sore for a long time

I wouldn't say that. I don't know why you think Deng is doing such a thing.

I guess it's safe to say Deng has become an injury prone player. This is like 3rd time missing a lot games in a row in his career. First wrist injury, then back pains, now sore achilles.

Umm... Deng played in all 82 games last season. And 78 the year before...

What are you talking about? Deng doesn't want to get injured, so he's sitting out games...injured? Tendinitis and back spasms are chronic, and will most likely plague his career. Why would anyone use a CHRONIC ailment to increase his value? Right - that why I think these are not really serious injuries - Deng is just so reluctant to get hurt & lose a huge payday that he is using any nick or scratch as an excuse to sit out as long as possible.

Don't expect Deng back until he's 110% better. I doubt he wants to risk anything on a contract year. Especially having crappy games due to an injury, because I'm sure that injury excuse of why he had crappy games won't fly once the real negotiating begins.

His rookie year he missed like half the season with that wrist injury. This season he has missed about 6 games or more and probably going miss even more. He has already had two injury's this year back pains and achilles. Just saying Deng is becoming injury prone.
