Orlando Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard acknowledged Friday that he has become a first-time father of a baby boy born recently in Orlando.
Howard, 22, told the Orlando Sentinel after the team's shootaround in Denver that he was the boy's father.
"I'm not going to deny it. Yes, I have a son," Howard said. "It's just my personal life. Yes, I'm excited about it, but I'd like to keep my personal life personal."
The mother is Royce Reed, a former Orlando Magic dancer.
Reed was a member of the Magic's dance team at least during the 2005-2006 season, according to club's Web site. She danced for the Miami Heat during the 2006-07 season, according to the Heat's Web site.
Juanita Reed, Royce Reed's mother, said the baby, Braylon, was born Nov. 18 in Orlando, three weeks early.
"She's doing great," Juanita Reed said Friday. "Royce and Dwight are very happy. They are very good friends. How close they are, well, you'd have to talk to them. I'm just the grandma. It was not something that was planned. It was a beautiful surprise, though."
Howard, who signed a contract extension this season believed to be worth $85 million over five seasons, is expected to make his first start for the Eastern Conference in next month's NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans. He is the leading vote-getter among centers in either the conference with more than 1.4 million votes.

OT: Dwight Howard is a father?
Interesting. As I was reading this article, I couldn't help but remember when he was first drafted how Dwight suggested we could improve the image of the NBA by changing the logo to include a Cross. He was very vocal about his religious beliefs and his commitment to living a very Christian lifestyle even though he is making all this money.

I'd imagine they're pretty close. And isn't Royce usually a dude's name? This is like people naming their son Ashley or Kelly.

Yeah, I think his name was mentioned in something I read about Christian NBA players and abstinence and stuff...I think it was separate from the ESPN Redd article that talked about Redd abstaining from sex until marriage.
Anyway, Dwight's his own man, I'm not one to judge, but it's kind of an interesting story.

I can only hope that culture and environmentalism will combine somewhere and result in some new parents naming their new kid Prius.

How come I haven't heard any "Virgin" chants from road crowds whenever Redd touched the ball? That makes me sad about sports fans in this country.

Yeah, I'm not judging but I thought it was interesting. It just made me wonder what got him to step away from this abstinence pledge.fam3381 wrote:Yeah, I think his name was mentioned in something I read about Christian NBA players and abstinence and stuff...I think it was separate from the ESPN Redd article that talked about Redd abstaining from sex until marriage.

Gee, I'm trying to think who could possibly have given you this information...btw, I got a call from your source the other night about the Villanueva/Voskuhl parking lot incident (right after you got your call). I think your source is mean and judgmental.

What happened with CV, Voskuhl and 75's sister in a parking lot?

Goddamnit fam...this is only going to add to Nowak's fascination with my sister. She does business at the Bradley Center often for the United Way and was walking out to her car when apparently Ivey and Villanueva were saying "suggestive" things and looking at her when Voskuhl (married with two girls) told them to stop. That's that...**** you Nowak before you even say anything.

Educated guess, I think it was you that said fam went to a game w/ her and w/o you pretty recently. Also people don't usually use mean or judgmental in any kind of relation with a normal source, that was the big key, sorry fam.
Then I looked again and it was worded in a gender-neutral way. Elementary, my dear MACC Fund! That was fun, time for a toot. Sorry if this makes anyone else guard their words even more carefully than they already do.
That's funny about the parking lot though, wtf CV and Ivey. You guys should have made that board knowledge earlier anyway, maybe I missed it. Also fun to think of Voskuhl in that context now, seeing him walk halfway onto the court to congratulate everyone when they call a timeout.
