Suns - Wolves

Post#1 » by MN Die Hard » Sun Jan 13, 2008 5:41 am

Marcus Banks and 2008 #1 (via Atlanta)

for

Michael Doleac and 2009 #1 (via Boston)

The cost-conscious Suns cut three years of Banks for the expiring Doleac, while the Wolves add a mid-first rounder this year in an attempt to jump start their rebuilding.

Would the lux-tax-conscious Wolves take on Banks' contract for an expiring? That ATL pick might not even wind up in the lotto.

Probably not, but if we would bring in Banks and cut Telfair loose at the end of the year it should be pretty close to a wash.

Taking on Banks guarantees that MIN doesn't have the money to re-sign one or two of their young productive players, so MIN ought to include them. PHO is still "win-now" but they have to do it in a cash-conscious way. If it was a Banks deal, I'd suggest:

Banks + ATL 1st for Doleac + Gomes (or Smith or Telfair .. their choice).

The BOS 1st is a future guaranteed salary, and not a very high-level player. PHO gets a player that can help them now, and they have total financial flexibility to decide whether to keep him. But most of the value of the trade for the suns is getting out from under the Banks deal, and sliding under the lux.

I know Banks is young, but I wouldn't want to do this deal. MIN hopes Foye is the future, Telfair has played surprisingly well, and a couple of the top picks in next year's draft also play PG, and this might force MIN to pass on the Best-Available-Player. Also for PHO, while Banks is financially damaging, he does provide a bit of production.

If I was making a play for the ATL pick, I'd offer:

Craig Smith + Ryan Gomes + MIN #2 for Piatkowski + ATL #1

This adds about 20 PPG and 9 RPG to PHO for the unproductive Piatkowski, and best of all, these players are both cheap, and unguaranteed salaries .. something Sarver would love. I also included the MIN #2, most likely the 31st pick in the draft, which is also unguaranteed.

Lastly, as a side note, let me say to the Hawks posters that I like your players, you'll do better in the second half, and I think that you guys are going to make the play-offs.

I think the ATL pick is worth a little more than that.

Well, when I checked today, its not even a lotto pick, and Sarver seems to want to get under the luxury tax threshhold.
