Wallace Headed for Immortality?

Post#1 » by transplant » Sun Jan 13, 2008 4:29 pm

As many of you know, I'm not a Wallace-basher.

I was looking over Hollinger's stats for centers.

Wallace is shooting 32.9% this season. It's easily the worst shooting performance of his career when he played 30+ mins/game (next worst is 42.1% and his career average is 47.4%). Of the 57 centers Hollinger lists, Wallace is dead last...by a lot. Of centers averaging 30+ mins/game, the next worst is Mehmet Okur at 41.1%...and about 1/3 of his shots are 3s.

Has any starting center in the history of the NBA shot under 35% for a season? My guess is no, so I think Big Ben has a chance at setting a record that may never be broken...sort of an inverse DiMaggio.

Can anyone think of a 30+mpg NBA center who can top (bottom) Wallace?

From the thread title I thought you were asking whether he's going to drop dead soon.

Tyson Chandler! Oh wait you said worse than Wallace. No in that case I can think of none.

Hey at least he hit that clutch free throw last week to beat the Kings and finish the game with 1 point.

Wasn't a center, so he doesn't qualify. He was a career 52% shooter and his worst season as a full-time player was 42.7%.

that's for center averaging at least 30 mpg, by season.

Wallace is on pace to crush the record. 33.5% is the worst, set in 1952! Most of the worst seasons were set in the 50s. Of the 30 worst seasons (.400 or worse) the most recent were '02, '87, '75, '68, '61. Only 2 guys in the bottom 30 had a ft% under .625 (.583, .589). Only 6 guys scored under 10 ppg, the lowest at 7.7 (Mark Eaton, he also averaged over 4 blocks a game///Wallace is at 6.5 points PER 48 MINUTES)

Tyrone Hill has the worst percent in the last 30 years at 39%.

The worst ts% ever for a center averaging 25 mpg is .386, Big Ben is at a monstrous .362.

Ben is putting up, without out a doubt, the worst offensive season for a center in the history of the NBA.

It's looking pretty historic.

For centers, just filtering by the total # of mins Wallace has played this season SO FAR (1060 mins), in the last 26 years, only Manute Bol had 2 seasons and Chris Dudley had one season below 37%. Neither played 30 mins game in those seasons.

For forwards, Bruce Bowen had a season where he played 2600 mins and shot 36% from the field. No one else played 2000 mins.

Could we say that this is overally the worst offensive performance for any centre in the history of the League? And if this guy is also quite a bit streaky on the defensive end, why exactly do we play him 30+ minutes? Can anyone explain that to me?

when he breaks this record he should be known as the worst offensive player in the history of the nba.
I have a soft spot for tall, skinny, athletic big men who have little offensive game.

It gets even more pathetic when you look at his true shooting % compared to the rest of the league. There isn't another player anywhere close to Ben Wallace territory this season.

He doesn't need to break any record to convince anyone with basketball knowledge of that fact.
