According to William Houston in the Globe, Bob McCown is earning more than $700,000 .... so there is big money in sports broadcasting when you reach higher levels.

That, and he's becoming a Canadian citizen. That says a lot about how much he lives for this team AND this country.

i don't get the constant bashing of leo's short lived nba career from chuck. he seems to bring it up every game they call together. rautins must want to kill him

The difference is this...

I can picture Saunders and Shulman on a national stage...

I can't picture Chuck on the same stage. He'll never be more than a regional broadcaster used as a puppet to sell the game.

As much criticism as he gets, he is perfect for the Toronto market in trying to sell the game. It's like if you watch (although I know none of you do lol) the US national markets doing an NHL game. They try to make every little play exciting, and call it way over the top, purposely.

I think his hyperbolic style of calling the game is needed in selling the product... with that said, he is not very pleasing to the diehards. To a lesser extent, I think Leo is in the same situation.

There's a reason Leo does CBC and TSN over Jack, as Jack caters more to the diehards.

That's a good comparison.

I wonder though why he relentlessly and continuously bashes opposing teams and management. Where does that fit in with trying to sell the game?

I like chuck... Remember we are trying to build a fan base, he appeals to a younger audience... he does a great job, for new fans..

i get excited when there's a raptors game on, i turn to the game and then i can't handle chuck at all.

everything is so emphatic and over the top. almost like wwf announcing,

i watch lots of non-raptors games and the announcers are always calm and basically call the game and then chat about the analysis. i much, much prefer this.

holy, there's that much advertising revenue in radio and sportsnet. are his guests paid? my assumption is they get some hourly rate (way under $100/hour??), but mostly it's exposure for themselves and their employers.

Actually, Houston reported its a 5 year deal for just under $800k/year.

I really don't mind Chuck after listening and comparing to all the other feeds around the league. He's not perfect, and he's a homer, but I still put him in the upper half of the league for calling a game.

Just listen to broadcasts from Cleveland... Boston... Denver... San Antonio and on and on and you begin to appreciate our broadcast teams' style, ESPECIALLY when Chuck is teamed with Jack.

Although he can be over the top some times, as I've mentioned previously, I feel Chuck has toned it down quite a bit this season.

I have to wonder whether or not the comments concerning Chuck's bashing of opposing teams has to do with his relentless bashing of the Knicks on Friday night. I do think that he carried on with it a little too long but, he didn't say anything that any one of us were already thinking.

That being said, overall, I like Chuck. I find his broadcasts to be fun. As the Raptors become a better team, I think he'll start to tone it down even more and start letting the game speak for itself. A lot of his catchphrases and shtick came from when the Raps were pretty horrible. I think he'll start to abandon those things as the Raps get involved in more meaningful games.

Chuck is ridiculed on this board so much, he's become underrated.
