CLE/MIA/SAC

Post#1 » by Crimson King » Sun Jan 13, 2008 6:42 pm

CLEVELAND
Outgoing: Eric Snow, Donyell Marshall, Damon Jones, Ira Newble, CLE 1st
Incoming: Mike Bibby, Kenny Thomas

They take Thomas, but keeping Gooden and every valuable piece.

Ilgauskas/Varejao/Jones
Gooden/Thomas/Simmons
James/Pavlovic
Hughes/Brown/Brown
Bibby/Gibson

MIAMI
Outgoing: Jason Williams, Ricky Davis
Incoming: Ron Artest, Damon Jones, Donyell Marshall

O'Neal/Blount
Haslem/Marshall
Artest/Wright
Wade/Cook
Jones/Quinn/Parker

SACRAMENTO
Outgoing: Mike Bibby, Ron Artest, Kenny Thomas
Incoming: Jason Williams, Ricky Davis, Ira Newble, Eric Snow, CLE 1st

Not the best for Bibby and Artest, but if they choose to rebuild and not resign Artest something like this (19 mill in expirings+pick) is not a bad start.

Miami takes the deal. I've long been fascinated by the idea of Miami using its expirings to facilitate a Bibby+KT to Cleveland trade.

Most agreed that Bibby was worth expirings and a 1st. So take that out (Bibby for JWill/Newble/Cle 1st) and you're left with Artest/Thomas for Ricky Davis & Snow. That's horrible

I'd like to know the other fans opinion about this deal for the Kings too, not only Kings fans opinion.

Kings pass in a nanosecond. Petrie's not bending over for Danny Ferry of all of people.

Artest/Thomas for Davis/Snow is horrible? Of course is not a great trade, but not a bad one, and at all 'horrible'.

Are you kidding me? I think I'm 1 of the more conservative people in the whole Artest's value spectrum but it's absolutely laughable to say that Artest's value as a whole is taking ONE YEAR off of Kenny Thomas' deal

Let me preface this by saying that I don't think the Kings should do the OP either. Bibby and Artest are probably their best trade chips right now, and they don't get a whole lot back here.

That said, here are some interesting numbers for those who think taking back Kenny Thomas isn't that big a hardship. Looking at PPG this season:

Overall, KT is 397th out of 431 in PPG.
Overall, KT is 412th out of 431 in points/48. Calvin Booth is 410th.

In both cases, no one ranked lower than him has a contract approaching what he still has left. So remember, that's one of the worst offensive players in the entire league, yours for only $25M.

(And yes, I know that PPG certainly isn't the only measure of a player. But Kenny's supposed strengths, defence and rebounding, are things the Kings are deeply in need of, yet he can't get into games to do that, either.)

If the Kings can dump him for ANY shorter contract, they should probably consider it a gift.

We know Kenny sucks, but he hasn't always sucked. He's been a double double guy over an entire season in this league before. So it's not like this guy is Jerome James here where he had 10 days of good basketball. He's not injured, he's not old. So it's very realistic that he could be a serviceable player in the right situation. He's in a rut, that he probably won't get out of in Sacto IMO. He needs a trade as much as the Kings do.

With that said, I understand he has no value, even negative value...but for any Cavs deal to muster up the necessary value to acquire Bibby, Thomas HAS to go in the other direction.

This is have to be the only comment I seen actually positive to Kenny Thomas from Smills :o

If by "realistic", you mean "speculative", then maybe. Not exactly the kind of thing general managers rush to bet $25M on...and whether Kenny himself needs the trade is of no consequence to the other team. He's one of the league's worst contracts, period.

The kings get shortchanged on value for artest, but they get a lot of cap space and the cavs pick is good, but it needs to be unprotected. I wouldn't be upset if this deal actually went down.

Why is it speculative? For Nene, yes absolutely. Oden, sure. But Kenny THomas has actually put up 10/10 for an entire season and then some. I'm not saying he's great, he's not. But the fact is he's done it before and it's not like it's age/injuries that are preventing him from doing it now. It's fit/location/team dynamics etc which change in a trade. He definitely has no positive value, but you're painting him as a Jerome James level player and the fact is, he's actually accomplished something for a sustained period of time in the NBA. Kenny Thomas is much close to Mike Dunleavy than Jerome James in the spectrum of overpaid scrubs.

Sacramento can get one of two things for Ron Artest: cap relief or talent. They get a ton of one and little of the other, and remember, Artest is good as gone most likely and getting almost 20 million in expiring deals, getting rid of Kenny Thomas and getting a first rounder is good value for two guys who really aren't helping you to begin with.

You almost made a decent argument until you get to that last part

The only reason Artest isn't being a significant help is because on the shelf right now with an injury, but the implecation that Artest isn't valuable is rediculous.

Cavs will not take Thomas unless Hughes is in the Trade.

maybe its best to take Cleveland out of the mix.

The only way that the Kings even consider taking on Larry Hughes is if Lebron is suddenly up for grabs, otherwise you're talking out of your ass.
