He gets heavy praise for the statistics he puts up, and all the triple-doubles he records. But really, his Nets team is underachieving and they have a poor record. So if all his triple-doubles aren't helping his team win, wouldn't it just equate to stat-padding? Other players get criticism for padding their stats all the time, so why not Kidd?
He is shooting 36% on the year and 32% from beyond the arc. This is terrible, even for Kidd's standards. But the fact remains is that Kidd has never been a good shooter and an extremely inefficient scorer, and because of Kidd's inept scoring abilities this area of his game will always be an achilles heel to his teams. A good PG should be able to score when his team is in a funk, if the rest of Kidd's teammates can't seem to put the ball in the net, he is ineffective as he can't score effectively either.
He gets high praise for his defense and rebounding, but a lot of his rebounding numbers are inflated due to the fact that when the ball hits out of the rim the frontcourt players allow Kidd to get the rebound so he can initiate the offense quicker. Not to mention their are no dominant rebounders in the Nets frontcourt, so it's a lot easier for him to grab boards. I'm not saying he's a bad rebounder, he's a fantastic rebounder for the guard position. However, his rebounding numbers would not be this high on any other team.
In regards to his defense, Kidd was an All-NBA defensive player in his prime, but in recent years it has dropped off considerably and he is still living off past reputation. This is evident, as the Nets surrender 4 points less when he is off the court. Jason Kidd has also allowed opposing PG's to shoot at a clip of 50.4% on the year. He is still a good help-defender, but his man-to-man defense has dropped off immensely from past years.
Based on these facts I don

At this stage in his career, I think that Kidd is overrated. He can still pass the ball and rebounds great for a PG but his scoring and defense have both slipped quite a bit the past 2-3 years. And the NJ offense hasn't been that great the past 3 years with him running the show. Mediocre at best despite the fact that he's got 2 all-star caliber talents to pass the ball too.
I've seen 2 recent lists ranking the leagues best PG's and they both had Kidd ranked 2nd behind Nash. Which seems more like a lifetime achievement award than an honest ranking.
Along with Nash, I think that Chris Paul and Chauncey Billips are clearly better players. And I think that Deron Williams, Tony Parker and Baron Davis have all passed him as well with Jose and TJ not that far behind.

with the rise of steve nash and the handful of upcoming star guards over the last few seasons i was beginning to forget about kidd and how he led a weak nets team to the finals two years in a row, forgetting about him until last april when i witnessed him single handidly will his team over the raptors with considerable ease. Calling kidd overrated is like calling yo momma over rated.

Yes- I do in fact think Kidd is overrated. If you look throughout his career he has good numbers but he also had very good teammates. I feel he has been overrated the past few seasons because he gets so many triple doubles. If you look at the majority of the triple doubles though, they're usually something like 10/10/11 or so. Those triple doubles can look good on the stat sheet but when it comes down to it if your team is underachieving with 3 allstars, how good could you be?

I do think that he's a little bit overrated now. He is an intelligent player, a fierce competitor, and a leader. But I don't think he would make enough of a difference on a team like the Lakers to justify the asking price. It would be an interesting experiment to see how much he could improve that team.
