He keeps getting stronger so it's hard for him to get a bead on how hard to go with his shot . So he's gonna be an erratic free throw shooter until his strength peaks

Given the importance of putting the ball in the net, one might think all of the NBA's 30 teams would have a shooting coach. After all, all Major League Baseball teams have batting coaches and pitching coaches and bullpen coaches. But fewer than half of the NBA's clubs have someone teaching shooting full-time.

Note these numbers: Seven of the top eight teams in the Western Conference employ a shooting coach. None of the seven worst teams in the Eastern Conference does.

The Wizards didn't have such a coach last season, when Brendan Haywood, for example, dipped to 54.8 percent on free throws, putting his career average below 60 percent. After a few months with Hopla, Haywood is at 71.5 percent. Caron Butler's shooting percentages are at career-best levels on field goals (49.6), 3s (40.9) and free throws (88.7).

Are we one of the 7 worst teams in the East?

Do we definitely know that the Magic don't have one?

I thought that Dwight was working with one. iirc, during one of the recent telecasts, they said they were working with him on his follow through on his FT shot.

the Magic have a standard team shooting exercises, just like most teams, most of the shooting exercises are done with assistant coaches, and standard staff trainers...the Magic do not have a FT expert on staff like they did during the off season, and they do not have a proven shooting coach...go watch them practice sometime...

Guys I know someone that would be perfect and qualified for this job. This is not a joke. The Magic's operation skills are a joke. It is now a proven factor that the team's with shooting coaches are ranked amongst the highest in the league (ft%). The Magic continue to struggle from the line but do not hire anyone. Can someone please explain.

Here's the shooting coach's website www.shootnet.com that the Magic hired to work with Dwight this summer.

Looks like he is doing work for Doc Rivers also.

The rumor is that Dwight wanted him to stay on but SVG wanted to use his own coaching staff.

I think that has been the case with every coach the Magic have had.

Someone asked Brian Hill about that last year, and he said they had plenty of coaches and any of them could help any of the players with their shooting.

Personally, I think they should hire coaches to work with the team on other specific areas that they have problems, too. Who said that Dwight is the only ones who needs specific coaching? I'm sure all the players could benefit from a little one-on-one work. Dwight certainly has shown considerable improvement.

Well Richardson seemed to have been doing wonders with Dwight.

I have to say, though, that I don't really think the Magic players have a problem with their shooting stroke. It's a problem with their focus when they go to the free-throw line. Maybe it's nerves, pressure, maybe the later it gets in the game, they get tired and their concentration isn't as sharp as it was at the start of the game.

But honestly, Dwight's free-throw shooting looks fine. He's not like Shaq when you just want to duck and hope that brick doesn't hit you. And Dwight has shown that he's perfectly capable of hitting a string of them, too, and he doesn't miss badly that often. He just misses most of the time.

Besides, some of the guys that normally hit 80-90 percent have been missing some free throws, too. You can't tell me that there is anything wrong with their stroke. To me, it's more of a problem that those other guys don't get to the line more. Dwight is the guy taking most of the Magic's free throws. He regularly takes more free throws than the rest of the team combined.

Anyone hear Steele the other night? Matty was talking about some team using a shooting coach and David goes "what an idea!" lol.
