Here's an update onhow Fran is doing. He says he likes our style of play and hopes to come to the NBA one day. Whoopie!

So glad Fran approves. That was just the endorsement we needed to get this team back on track...

The article says that Fran is struggling to get minutes over there. I'm not up on Euro basketball, but if he can't get minutes over there, what makes us think he could even help this team? He's 24, it's not like he's a really young player trying to develop.

The Enigma That Is Fran Vazquez

Post#5 » by orl1724 » Mon Jan 14, 2008 3:46 pm

Good read about Fran, seems like he does want to come over and he may just do that in a season or 2. He would be a Darko 2.0 version we wanted next to Dwight.

"I have a positive relationship with Orlando, we are in regular contact," said Vazquez, who is under contract to Barca for one more season after this. "It's just a question of seeing how my contract here in Barcelona develops and to be able to exit here and go over there [the NBA].

"That is still my ambition. I like the way they [Magic] play, the system, the style they play. But at the time I was drafted, I was not at my peak, I understood that. I need to improve my inside game and work in the weight room, so I am moving forward with that.

"Being drafted was obviously very flattering, however, I feel playing in Europe for three years has allowed me to develop my skills and develop as a team player. In the long run, I have been able to gain a lot of skills I wouldn't have been able to get immediately [in the NBA]).

And what made me happy,

"Orlando often sends me tapes of their games and I often sit there watching them and see the team playing together so well. I do wonder how it could be and how nice it would be to be a part of that."

24 isnt young anymore lol? I think at 24 he can still improve. Im not sure how good he would do over here either, but Im sure he hasnt maxed out his skill sta 24.

His style of play is more fitted for the NBA is what I have heard...he "doesn't fit in" over there or something. You would think that would make him want to come over here if he really loved the game and wasn't just doing it for the money.

I guess it's sort of like the problem that Yi had with playing for the Bucks. He felt like he wasn't going to get the playing time that he felt he deserved. Of course, with the holes we have down low this season, it's not inconceivable that he'd be a starter right now...

Well from everything Ive read hes not a typical euro big. Hes more of a defensive minded player and likes to bang in the paint. Whereas most love the perimeter and are soft. So maybe he doesnt fit in well..?

He def does not fit well in Europe. They got a a different style of play and his skills dont translate well there. His skills would be better suited in the NBA.

iirc ginobli waited a couple years to come over and look at him now... im not saying fran will have that kind of impact but he could come in and help.... having him and battie say by next season would be a huge boost to the team and give us quite a big man rotation.
Summertime and the livin's easy....

I really don't think Fran will have much, if any, impact in the NBA. I didn't when he was drafted, and I still don't.

Because Smith and Twardzik do not know how to draft players.

Get back with me when he's got a contract with the Magic. Until then, I'm going to continue to believe he's never coming over here.

You know if he comes over and maybe gets to a point where he can contribute the way Tony Battie did, I'd be pretty happy with him. As long as he's not some lazy, bi-polar a**hole like Darko.
You look confused...let me fill you in.
