Gasol is about equal to Hoford in value. Sorry Memphis soft big men don't command as much value as tough bigs do. I know Gasol blocks shots it's just that he has PF skills in a C's body and can't move quick enough on rotations causing him to be soft in the middle and he avoids contact. Horford is a Bruiser and will beat up people who come into the lane and is almost averaging a double double in his rookie season I think he's going to get better.

Yet Wallace wouldn't be able to scream "deal" fast enough if BK called him with this.
Look, Pau said he didn't want to be there before the season and his offensive numbers are down from previous years and his defense was nothing to scream about before that. This has torpedoed his value. Stoudamire wants out anyway so its not like he is a big asset in the deal because there is a chance he forces a buyout anyway.
Atlanta gives up a promising 3rd pick and a super-efficient 6th man for Pau and some filler. The lineup of:
Damon
Joe
Marv
Josh (he is our PF)
Pau
Looks good because Smith can help cover for Pau on D. The problem is we have to have some cash around in the offseason to resign Josh Smith and Pau has a HUGE contract.

There is no value in the deal coming back to Memphis. If you keep the four players in place leaving Memphis, then we should get back
Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Shelden Williams, and Salim Stoudamire.
Atlanta probably does not do this but The Grizz do not exist simply to satisfy the needs of other teams. Chris Wallace has correctly said the deal has got to make sense, so getting back two guys whom you intend to buy out really does not qualify. I do like Atlanta as a trade partner but not at our detriment.

The trade looks pretty good for both sides. One think I would do to change it would be remove Warrick and Solomon Jones and it still works.
Horford, Childress, and the future first are a good return for Pau and JCN, especially with how Pau is playing. The cap room with the expirings is really nice for Damon and the trade looks very balances.

Horford was the number 3 pick in the most recent draft, a player that by all accounts was very highly coveted by Memphis. He has already shown that he can produce and would fit in very well in the young enviroment and fast paced offense of Memphis. Considering that Gasol has a lot of money left on a long contract, I'd say that's more than fair. Getting rid of that contract has value in itself to Memphis, if they can get a cornerstone type of player out of it, why not? Beyond that Gasol looks like he doesn't fit in, his numbers are down. After that, Atl is giving up a bunch of exprings and Childress, a great addition to a fast paced team (3rd best player in this deal) and a guy that could easily be used in an S&T when the season ends. If Memphis wants to rebuild, this trade is great.
Bottom line is you aren't getting a current all-star for Gasol unless they have baggage or are from another team that wants to rebuild.
EDIT: and for that reason ATL prolly doesn't take on Gasol's salary or give up Horford.

I don't think anyone is looking for a current all-star in return, just something more than ATL's bench sludge.

Bench sludge? Lue, AJ, Salim, and Wright give you $10m in expiring deals. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the wheeling and dealing that goes on in this league, but that is worth quite a bit in itself... especially to a bottom rung team like Memphis that wants to get the massive contract of an underachieving player off it's payroll. I'm not sure why Solomon Jones was included, I guess a cheap, young, and athletic 7-footer can't hurt but he is really raw. Childress is a much more productive player than any of the guys outside of Gasol that ATL gets back and Horford is a very productive lottery pick on the first year of a rookie contract. I'm not sure why you think $10m in expirings + Childress + Horford isn't enough for an unhappy player on a massive contract, a 34 year old point guard that wants to be bought out, a 210 pound power forward who doesn't block shots, and an undersized shooting guard. What is a better offer in your opinion?
Don't get me wrong, Gasol is a great player but you have to realize that his value is depressed right now because he said he wouldn't mind being traded before the season. Since his numbers are down it would seem to an outsider, or another team's GM, that he still doesn't want to be there or he'd put in more effort.

Atlanta fan seems to be catching the same disease that other fans have and that is we must trade Pau Gasol so accepting your castoffs and trinkets is doable. It is not, the owner has even said he is not going anywhere unless we get something good coming back. What was offered is not good, and cap space in this world of wheeling and dealing does not hold as much weight here in Memphis. We want real and tangible quality so the players may not be all stars but there upside needs to be undeniable. Another point of emphasis should be to compare what other teams or rumored or can offer and make your deal little sweeter than that.

Undeniable upside? Isn't that Al Horford? Wasn't he the number 3 pick and consensus number 3 player in this draft? Isn't he in the discussion for rookie of the year? YES.dark-child wrote:Atlanta fan seems to be catching the same disease that other fans have and that is we must trade Pau Gasol so accepting your castoffs and trinkets is doable. Childress is on slouch either, and can be resigned for the MLE (or so) at the end of the year or left to sign his tender and leave in another year.
I can understand Memphis saying no, but calling these players 'sludge' is pretty dumb considering they are integral parts of a team that is playing MUCH better than Memphis right now (as aforementioned, starting C and 6th man).

Indeed, outside of Durant and Oden what Rookie do you think has more upside? Which would better fit the mold of player that Memphis wants? Didn't Memphis unload Reef' for Pau, they could do something similar in Pau for Horford.
By the way, can you explain why Memphis is immune to the average team's desire for cap space? For one, Memphis is a team that is losing money annually, why would a team that lost $11m last season not want to clear that much money off the books in one swift move AND get the player that they wanted the most in the draft? Is it because Heisley is rich? He also wants to sell the team and probably doesn't want to spend $15m on a player that isn't making his team win. This isn't the Dolans or Paul Allen or something.
Again, what do you think Pau Gasol is worth if not a top 3 pick who is currently second in the ROY race and a whole bunch of cap relief. Like most posters here said, Hawks probably don't do this, but I'm curious which non-All Star you think you can get that has higher value than Al Horford?

Dark-child do you know who Al Horford is?
