One of the greatest basketball players of all time, has retired. Alonzo Mourning admitted today that he would retire from the game. Personally he was a great character guy with good work ethics, but what he did to Toronto Raptors was just wrong. (I understand the situation because he wanted to be on a winning team and not a rebuilding team).

One of the few things I've agreed with you so far. Yes, Mourning did screw us over. But nevertheless, he made an epic comeback and is a great competitor.

"One of the greatest of all-time" is a bit over the top IMO - and Mourning was probably my favourite player (along with Grant Hill) when I was watching avidly in the mid-90s. IMO he was the fifth best center of his era (behind Hakeem, Shaq, Robinson, Ewing), and above Ewing defensively for sure. More importantly, what is lost in the whole Raptors/Babcock-saga, is he is an outstanding human being and class act. He is also a great role model for people with health problems and need transplants. He has an enormous heart and I applaud him for a fantastic, borderline Hall of Fame career.

Heat: Mourning retirement untrue

MIAMI (TICKER) -- Alonzo Mourning's retirement is off just hours after the Miami Heat center made it official.
A spokesman for the Heat said a story erroneously was placed on the team's web site Monday confirming that Mourning will call it quits.

The Mourning-Raptors ordeal made me notice what is wrong with the NBA. Far to many players in this league are cocky and arrogant, and get the sense that they are above the team they play for. I strongly believe there is a problem in a sports league when a player refuses to report to a team, and in the end gets paid a large sum of money to do so. Granted, this isn't the first time this has happened in the NBA and the Raptors were in somewhat similar positions in the past (Damon going public about not re-signing after his deal was up, AD contemplating on not reporting to the team during his second stint here) but this whole situation meant a lot more to me because we had traded our franchise player for a key guy that wouldn't even step foot into Toronto.
That being said he was a very good player in this league and coming back from his Kidney disease was truly an insperational act. He still had game and arguably was the best player for the Heat this season before his injury. All in all a very good player and perhaps HOF worthy some day but the whole incident with the Raptors tainted my image of him.

European guys / Undrafted Guys/ Americans that dont give a damn where they play. Guys like Steve Francis, Alonzo Mourning, Kenny Anderson, BJ Armstrong are some of the most obnoxious players I have ever seen. At least have some class like Davis or TMAC and then walk out or something.
