And if they said "No" then what would you have done? Because Mahinmi, if I am correct, dictated no terms whatsoever. He was able to negotiate for absolutely nothing because the Spurs gave him a total lowball offer they wanted him to REFUSE.
In that situation, there are no bonuses given to get you to sign, because they want you to hate the contract.
So if you were in his place, your "I'd at least make sure to get some incentive compensation in there" would be followed by them asking you if you wanted a call for a taxi to get you to the airport - because you'd be headed back to Europe this season with no NBA deal at all. You wouldn't have gotten anything more from them than 80% each year. There'd be no bonuses, no raises above 80%, just the absolute rock bottom. And an "it's this or Europe" ultimatum.
