Controversy?? There is no controversy, he is the best, and lakers are playing the best right now (i doubt it will stay like that w/o bynum)
The only man that can stop Kobe Bryant is . . . Phil Jackson.

It's amazing the best player ever has never won an mvp award. To bad Bynum went down or it would have been in the bag. Who else is even close? Maybe KG and Howard.

Kinda sad, but those numbers pretty much directly correspond with eachother.

If we move down to 2nd, 3rd, 4th in the Power Rankings, Kobe's place in the MVP race will follow accordingly.

Kobe's only chance is to hold on to 1st place...so...pretty much no MVP for Kobe.

I don't know -- if we can keep our head above water and forge a respectable record (say, 15-12) without Bynum, Kobe will have obviously played a major part of that. His numbers will jump, and he'll get plenty of credit for holding down the fort without his second-best teammate. He just might be able to cinch it, especially if the Celtics (KG) cool off.

^That'll definately help.

But in all honesty, I think in order for Kobe to get enough writers to vote for him, he has to be part of a team that is perceived to be in the top 2 or 3.

He basically has to make it so they have no choice but to vote for him.

Since 1980, the winner of the MVP has been on a team that finished with at least a tie for the 2nd best record in the league 25 of the 28 years. The only exceptions were:

'05-'06 - Steve Nash (54-28 4th)
'87-'88 - Michael Jordan (50-32 tied for 7th)
'81-'82 - Moses Malone (46-36 tied for 7th)

Bottom line, is that the Lakers better keep winnng for Kobe to even have a chance. My prediction is that KG is going to get the MVP.

If Kobe wants to win the award, he has to keep the team at the same( elite ) level until Bynum comes back. Easy !

Finally, #1. Kobe can hold down the fort for a season if need be. We've seen him do that the past two seasons. Holding down 27 games, or a third of a season, is nothing for him IMO. And best case scenario is that Bynum is able to come back in 6 weeks instead of 8. Odom had the same injury and came back in 3 IIRC.

But for now, the GOAT is getting his recognition. About time.
