For my top 5, I think nobody that makes under $8 mil/year, or has a deal that expires as early as Summer of 2009 should make the list. Jerome James breathes a sigh of relief!

1. Kenyon Martin -- $60 mil, 4 years. Playing better, but nowhere near max deal production, plus he carries all that injury risk on top of the salary risk.

2. Shaq -- $60 mil on three years, and sadly, breaking down as we watch.

3. Ben Wallace -- $45 mil for three years. Playing poorly and disrupting others on the team.

4. Rashard Lewis -- $112 mil for six years. Not usually mentioned, but that's so much salary in place for so long out. Years 5 and 6 are both over $21 mil.

5. Eddy Curry $40 mil for 4 years -- he's productive enough to miss the list if his contract wasn't uninsured.

Honorable Mention: Larry Hughes -- $38 mil on three years, and injury risk.

That team would probably cost about $4 million in salary per win! :lol:

If Curry can't play because of his heart his contract automatically can be voided. And where's Marko Jaric? Quentin Richardson should probably also be strongly considered.

If you're right, I want some proof. But if you're shooting fom the hip, I'm pretty sure you are wrong.

Well, as I said in the very first sentence, players that aren't making $10 mil aren't going to make this list, and Jaric's averaging $6.9. Even if he was, Jaric's been far more productive than Jerome James, a guy with a similar contract. Lastly, Bill Simmons wrote a Top 25 Bad contract List last month, and Jaric didn't even make the Top 25, so you can see why none of the other posters have even mentioned him.

What's your issue with Jaric? Did he steal your date or something? From what I used to hear about him after games, that's not out of the question.

I can't find any evidence that teams have the rights to void player contracts .. and I'm sure the Player's Association would have something to say if they tried! I think they can keep them from signing an offer if they fail a physical, but once the contract is in place, the owner can't void it. The team can get an injury exception for another player after a year if an injury forces a player to retire, but the player still gets paid. In all but a handful of cases, insurance pays the majority of this salary.

This was mentioned several times when Curry was sign-and-traded.

Thomas was said to have worked with Curry's agent to add this clause in for the exact reason (because insurance companies would not cover Curry's contract because he refused to take some tests).

What I'm not sure of is IF Curry can play at least 3 seasons if, for arguments sake his heart fails in the 4th season, if it's still voidable.

Insurance isn't involved, that's why the clause was added and Curry's contract is NOT covered BY insurance.

Here's a blurb about it from a hardly complimenting blog site (that really would have little reason to make it up...just like I did based on what you are saying)...which also mentions what is otherwise another little known clause in the contract where Curry, for whatever reason, can opt out after next season.

What's worse, Eddy has an out in four years. So if Eddy turns up to be any good he walks after four years. So you take a huge gamble on a guy, it works out, but when you start reaping the benefits the guy can leave you."
